That is a pretty cool find. I would love to take a look at the die that struck that cent!

Thanks all! Sorry for posting and running but I'm doing the interviews for summer bat technicians today and it's just zoom, zoom, zoom. Yeah it's a neat coin, and thinking often mislabeled. Found an ebay listing for this kind of error in NGC holder called: "Struck thru split capped die." Now we all know the coin wasn't struck through a die, capped or otherwise. Apparently also, once a die splits (as I understand it that is a 0.5mm crack or wider or it's just a die crack), it is prone to picking up a die cap. So while really neat these aren't quite as rare as one would think. I do suspect that one also with a Cud would be pretty far on the rare end of things.

Really nice find. So, this would have been struck through a very late stage die cap, since the obverse is mostly visible, correct? Would you say the late stage is probably why the die crack and Cud are visible through the die cap?

Thanks! And yes, struck through a late stage die cap as the obverse details are fairly clear and no brockage left. But the Cud and crack are fairly major items on the die, and I've seen similar stuff that will show through just fine on an earlier state of die cap.
