For those of you who say the mint has only manufactured cents and not pennies, that may be, but our banks have been giving out penny wrappers ever since the creation of the Federal Reserve in 1913.

Next, cease the production of ALL coinage... Coins have become more of an inconvenience than a convenience to our modern, card-loving society. No more making, carting around and handling near worthless disks of metal. END IT ALL
You are not wrong.

Wow, Thad, that's quite a statement to make on a website for coin collectors! No more coins! Hmmm...
There will always be coins to be collected—ancients, classics, etc. These collectors care nothing about what comes out of the world mints today because people die and those coins come back on the market. I see no end in site for coin collectors, present and future.

I've been arguing for the discontinuation of the Cent since the introduction of the zinc Cent.
Preach it!

The Nickel should've joined it, and hopefully it will soon. I also agree with the end of the $1 Note, while simultaneously introducing a $2 coin, and of course continuing the $1 coin.
I give each of these a 50/50 chance of happening before coins go away completely.

The modern day public has never accepted a $1 dollar coin - why would they accept a $2 coin?
Get rid of the $1 and $2 notes, they will be forced to. Eliminating the notes is mandatory if you want coins to work.

Every other country in the world figured that out. Why can we not do the same? Because lobbyists.

Tipping dancers with coins would never work.

Don't you think tipping with dollar bills is a bit on the cheap side, today?

Why pay more for the same old thing?

I say that whenever I go to certain restaurants.

My response to that is that many of us don't have the finances to buy classic coins. For me there's nothing like finding a current coin in circulation that fills a hole in a folder. So I count on what I can get out of circulation for face value to give me the fun of coin collecting.

Yes, the loss of change and roll hunting will hurt. But most of the coins minted the past 75 years will still be cheap. Junk bins will still exist. Etc. There is no shortage of ways to build modern sets.

Though the penny is not being made for circulation anymore, I do not see how we will eventually become a cashless society. Maybe in 100 years, perhaps, but not any time soon.

It is easy to see how it will happen eventually if you consider all data.

Lamplighters and street sweepers did not see their end coming, either.

But I admit, it might not happen if our lifetimes.

I would submit that those are mere professions, as opposed to the lifeblood of American commerce.

While we're on the subject, we've only been talking about US coinage. Do you think the entire world will eventually become cashless?

Calling the penny—which has been made obsolete after 40 plus years of inflation—a lifeblood of American commerce is quite the stretch.

Yes, but it will take time. I believe those who trade in US dollars will move in lock-step with us. I would guess it would be several generations before that happens. Probably after the AI Robot Overlords take absolute power.
