.
. . .

Most of the tellers I know are also coin collectors, or a teller in the branch is.
You're lucky to get these!

I never ask tellers if they have "silver dollars" because I don't want to tip them off about the existence of those coins. I typically hold up an Eisenhower dollar (to show them the size of this coin) and ask if they have any "large dollars". Some tellers are familiar with Eisenhower dollars -- but others ask to examine it because they haven't seen one previously.

I agree it is remarkable that someone who owns Morgan dollars doesn't realize their value. However, this is the second time I've acquired silver dollars at face value. Last August a teller told me he had five large dollars in his tray. The top one was an Eisenhower coin -- but he also handed me two Morgan dollars and two Peace dollars. The teller told me someone who operates a liquor store deposited the coins. I surmise that a customer who was desperate to purchase alcohol gave them to him.

I don't think I've ever landed any dollar coins earlier than Eisenhowers bank roll hunting, but I've gotten Walking Liberty and Franklin halves in some rolls of halves I got about 20-some years ago. One roll had eight silvers in it.
Do not read this sentence.

Asking the tellers at my credit union about large dollar coins would most likely have them look at me like I were an E.T.
It's been my only "bank" account since 1987, but I've been thinking for a long time that I need to open a real bank account. If only there was a way to choose one that would be likely to have customer goodies turned in.

I learned long ago that my CU is a bust in this regard, after multiple tries over a few years.

I finally asked a teller at my bank if they had any large dollar coins. She said they have not seen any in about 3 years.
