I would not have given MS
Trying to understand why?
The flat spots in hair looks like wear, not weak strike to me.

Thanks everyone. We had storms and no internet or cell till now! I could not understand how the coin could be MS. While 1964 Dimes lack highly distinct hairlines, the significant blank spots in the hair suggested wear to me. The idea of grease in those areas is a reach, I think. I just don't quite understand if the difference between the hair lines of this coin and MS68 ( https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1964-10c/5128) is simply a strike difference or because of wear. My grading skills lack that kind of sophistication! I am thinking that the main idea of MS60 is identifying a coin without wear, and trusting (for a moment!) PCGS, the implication is that the difference is strike related and not wear related, so the coin would deserve MS60 - eye appeal being a non-issue at this level! The issue with L would then be viewed as a bag mark. I would welcome any thought-through responses of where I have gone off the rails! |

keep in mind that there are 4 components to grading
1. surface preservation
2. luster
3. eye appeal
4. Strike
PCGS determined that the coin was UNC. from there they had really only 3 choices based on MS60, 61, 62. the coin would not be any higher than that based on this photos.
luster is below average
eye appeal is low due to the surfaces
surface preservation is about as low as you can get, discoloration and scuffs.
reverse looks like a later die state so it looks like a weaker strike
they would have eliminated MS62 as a grade leaving 60 or 61. it could have went either way imo. there is nothing to compare it to as PCGS does not have a MS61 example posted. but I would think this is about the lowest possible MS grade a coin could receive

I have to agree, I see a lot of rubbing, but maybe that is just a limitation of the photo. |
