Very interesting. At least the seller is honest about the date being altered. Props to the seller for being honest and up front.  Errers and Varietys.

Altered date most probably, but I think an altered date on a fake coin. I think it crazy to alter the date on a genuine coin of this type.  |

The coin looks like a genuine 1800 to me.
You can see the shadow of the "0" behind the 4.
No one is going to take a fake 1800 and go through
the trouble to make a fake 1804.

Matches up perfectly with BB-192. I figure it must be a very old alteration, maybe 1870-1900? The 4 is executed really well, and its very close to an actual 1804 dollar, although despite the excellent work I doubt it fooled too many people, considering the ghost of the 0 is still obvious.

I am leaning toward the example as being a genuine 1800 with an altered date. The coin has the ebay Authenticity Guarantee, and will be sent to PCGS for authenticity. How does PCGS rule on the authenticity if it is a genuine 1800 with an altered date? The example is a fake 1804. |

And ... SOLD, for $1180. That would be a whopping bargain if it were the original 1800 in that condition, the market really punished the 'enhancement'.

Prior to when the toning became bolder, I'm wondering how much of the "ghost" 0 was visible? Guess we'll never know. |

Confusion on my end. I too am curious how Pcgs will treat this one with the new authenticity guarantee.

I wonder if someone really wanted the coin as a genuine 1800 with an expertly altered date, perhaps for a counterfeit collection, would the ebay authenticity guarantee prevent them from acquiring the coin? |
