Seriously, wouldn't it be great if these dang counterfeiters did stamp "copy" on all of their coins? Then the would be looked at as doing a service for collectors instead of the problem they are. Ahh, to dream...

over on iOffer, people have all sorts of "BU" Morgan dollars. I am pretty sure they are counterfeit. How much is a good price for one of these? They are selling for about 20USD.

I'll ask the obvious.....what makes you think they're counterfeit? Is there something "off" about them, or do you think they're fake because of the price?

So, if I buy coins on ebay that say "copy" on them, is that bad?
I want to fill some holes in my collection, but can't afford them. 1916D mercury, VDB-1909-s cent, etc

There is plenty of room in this hobby for all of us, so what ever you want to do is fine with me, provided you (or anyone else) does not attempt to push these coins off as anything but fake.

However, personally, I rather have several empty holes in my book than to put even one fake into it. It doesn't seem right to me, and I know, everytime I looked at it, I would know it was fake. It would truly diminish the coin collecting experience for me.

I would hope no one buys any fake coin, and Maybe, just Maybe, the counterfeiters would not have any buyers and would go out of business.

Ahhhh, to dream...

most of what I see being sold over there are 1921 Morgans from $19-25 dollars in grades good to bu. there are also other years in various grades in the mid $20 range. also allot of Peace dollars for under $30. they all look real to me.

I have routinely scoured the SF marketplace. Some of them are quite good and others downright awful. Even as fillers they are obvious fakes when sitting next to the real one. What years are you looking to fill?

Obviously some of the key's can be beastly financial punches in the face in higher grades.

Many coin collectors act with bravado when looking at coins and are too embarrassed to admit with honesty that they can be fooled.

I don't know if it is allowed on this board but there is a place in the hobart building in downtown that has a good selection. Nice older gent that will surely take care of you if you are just looking to fill a hole that has been staring you down with no mercy.

Put them in an incinerator and burn them. All Chinese fakes should be destroyed.

Offer them 2 Egg Rolls and a Pu Pu (pronounced Poo Poo) Platter for each and see what they say!

I, personally, would never counsel anyone to buy, and would discourage anyone I know, from buying a fake coin.

I think it's bad for everyone. It adds bad coins to a potentially gullible market and encourages counterfeiters to continue in their illicit (and felonious) trade.

That's my take on it.

I wish auction sites would do a better job policing counterfeits. Novice collectors buy this crap from China and then sour to the hobby when they find out they were ripped off.

With that said, I do have a 1906 S Philippine Peso in my collection. It came in poundage, and I could never afford a real one.

The only fakes id ever buy are Henning Nickels, those babies are the real clandestine deal. Maybe some of the contemporary counterfit walkers with fake date/mintmark combinations are collectable as well.

I wouldn't give two flattened, filed, chiseled, chipped, clipped, snipped, holed, mangled, mutilated, crusty corroded Zincolns for a Chinese counterfeit (even with free shipping)!
That being said, I would donate the above mentioned coins to the person willing to drop a load of counterfeit Chinese coins in the center of Hong Kong!
