haha. Growing up, I always had this guilty feeling when in stores... I felt like I was being scrutinized for stealing... and so I never even lifted a penny swedish fish.

I guess I have a guilty conscience.

I glance at them but dont usually sift through them. I noticed a Wheat cent face down in a tip jar yesterday but it didn't feel appropriate for me to ask to look at it at the time. It could have been that ever elusive 1909-S VDB that I need. :P

I look through, and rifle through, them all of the time! Never pass up an opportunity! But if I take something I always replace it, and tell the cashier what I am doing. Yet to come across a cashier that cares.

I look but don't touch, unless I see something interesting after asking the person behind the counter.

I look but don't touch, but at the PO I donate to my clerk now and then when I need to pay in change from my ashtray from the car or truck. I take the whole ashtray in with me. LOL! So if I look and see something in there he would let me have it. At the smoke shop down the street, I would ask if I could swap but wouldn't just take or poke around.

I'm with coppernickeldaddy, I have actually paid for my meal sat at the booth closest to the register and sorted through the whole jar(with permission of course). When I had swapped out several coins the cashier (wasn't busy) went through the till and I got 2 star notes to boot.

I just pulled a 1942-D Wheatie out of a 'GAP-TAP' (Give A Penny, Take A Penny) tray a few days ago!

Keep in mind that I've left two LP1 Log Cabin Cents in GAP-TAP's (obverse up). During my big hunt for LP1 Cents for my co-workers, I found two of them that were already down to AU condition. Since I saved only BU coins for my co-workers, I figured I'd leave any AU's in GAP-TAP's. And they weren't bad, or even spotty, they just had a bit of circulation wear on them.

I wonder how many people leave common date wheaties in there on purpose?

I recently bought a 40's wheat from the cup. I replaced it with two nice, tarnished zinc cents.

If someone leaves a common Wheat cent or a 2009 LP Cent in a GAP-TAP on purpose, they should put it in with the obverse facing up, to reward those who look at the dates.
