Chuckster, I can see that the original poster and myself were NOT the only one's to see the decline in quality.I would like to know who you know LOL, to get your set sent Over-night to you? I hope your set arrives and you are pleased with your new Proof set, I am still waiting for the replacement!

Mine looked the same. I ordered 50 clad and 50 silver sets on the first day they were available. After inspecting my clad, I kept 4 sets and sent the rest back. Of my silver, I kept 4 and sent the rest back. Looks like the Dime and Half Dollar were the most abused followed by the cents. Most of the dime torches had gashs while the shield scuffing and black specs on Kenedy's head were standard for the silver issue.

I don't know- maybe because I had spoken to a rep and complained the day I was returning them! (LOL)
Anyway- the Clad set came today- 3 of the 4 slabs are real nice, however, the Lincolns again have scratches etc , but I'm going to keep it and maybe try to buy another (S) lincoln set at a coin show etc- its getting to be too much of a pain to keep sending these back for exchanging and they are NOT re-imburseing for postage etc.* Already spent $8.00 extra playing the back and forth game!

Nelrak, I think you are on to something, order 40-50 sets and the odds would be in your favor to find 4-5 sets that are SWEET, after all that is all you want, 4-5 sets, Great Idea!!!!I sent mine back and they received it yesterday, now I hope NOT to receive one of the sets people have returned! So it is safe to say you look at your sets and coins closely!!!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2009 Proof Sets - New Frosty Finish
Posted: 14 Aug 2009 07:44 AM PDT
Several readers have provided reports and photos of their 2009 Silver Proof Sets which seem to feature a new type of proof finish. This new style appears to have been used for all proof coins released in 2009, but the frosty effect seems to display most prominently on the silver proof coins. I thought some would want to see this, explains why the set looks different.

Thanks, I feel much better now.... Seriously, I too returned all three proof sets (clad) I got. What I got back was mediocre at best, but the original sets they'd sent were awful, there was debris indside the lens and a huge gouge on one of the jeff nickels. Horrible! I was so disillusioned that I didn't even order the 2009 Silver set. :-\ I can't be bothered returning things back and forth. Don't thinkn other collectors out there don't know this. The net effect will be thousands of sets returned after slabbers are through with no one else wanting to buy any. And that will be just fine with the mint because these jokers will order them in the triple digits. Bruce

OK. I guess that I am the exception to the rule. The 2009 proof set that I got was real nice. No complaints about it. Here is a good question. What does the mint do with the returned sets? If I get another set will it be one that has been returned because someone didn't like it? Who sets or controls the quality control at the mint. If it was passed for inspection the first time, don't you think that the mint thinks that it will be good enough and send them out again?

The people who set or control the quality control at the U S Mint, they have been out to lunch since 1981....

Maybe the mints are cutting back in the quality because of budget cutbacks. I don't want to get political, but have you noticed that Bush and Obama capped off the already run away spending by spending us into oblivion. I wonder if coin collectors will have to focus more on the old collectibles instead of the new mint sets.
