Jim- for the record...you suck, but it was a great snipe. I give you credit for that.

Welcome to the boards. Glad it went to one of us.

Same here. Had it on watch but then didn't check my email for a couple days and it got away from me. Would have cost Jim more if I'd remembered it. (or I'd have it.)

Received the coin. There is a faint scratch above the date, very light and you can hardly see under 16x magnification. Aside from that, there are not even any digs, none, edges or anywhere. Well stuck, best I can find. I would have to say this is near the top ever graded. 66-67-68?
Proud to own a coin like this.

If it really looks gem or better, get it slabbed.

How is the luster? That is the one thing that was holding me back from bidding. I can't see any from the photos, but I'm not sure if that is because of the coin or the photos. Detail, Color and surfaces are all great; but lack of luster could hold it back. The fact that it doesn't show up in the pictures could very well be why the end bid went as low as it did. I'm not knocking the coin at all, it could very well be a gem; I just can't tell from the photos. Can you photograph it for us in direct light? I'm certain that the luster is going to be the deciding factor in this case for sure.

Another thing to be aware of is that TPGs right now are hammering down incredibly hard on toning. This means that any hint that the coin could be potentially artificially toned may cause them to put the coin in a problem slab. All that said, I think it's a stunning coin and you made a great purchase. Just don't be surprised if a TPG doesn't agree.

You got that right, Johnny. Too many tricksters I guess. Someone at Stack's told me "sure, they (TPG's) say 'questionable color' because all they see all day is artificial toning and it's hard to tell the difference after a while". LOL

I can tell you that one piece I'd sent that they'd 'bodybagged' (I don't holder problem coins) was marked as questionable. I am almost 100% positive that the toning is original.

I think the low bid wasn;t THAT low, especially given the whole color issue. Don't forget, the beholder of the piece, in hand, is the final judge. But I think someone else said that already. Sorry it's late lolol

There is no way, at least at this point, that I would be able to take a better picture of this coin. LOL
The surfaces are pristine, untouched. The luster is suspect? The coin is yellow, blue, red toning around the edges of both sides. The entire coin is then a grayish blue tone, really a steel blue. No circle of anything around the stars or anywhere. Very even color over most of the coin , the same on both sides.
It is really toned like a proof would, but this is not a proof.
There are no spots or unevenness to the color. No corrosion, not artificial looking.
I guess I will never know until submitted, as I will sometime.

Jim0068!

Sweet snipe!

I hope it looks as good in person (or better!) than these pictures! (And they look great!)
