I think if you can find true 'keys' in the lower grades at reasonable prices, they represent a good buy. No damaged or cleaned coins though.

I try to buy the best looking coin that I can afford at that time. Next time, I may be able to afford a better one. I then pass the extra on to someone else or hold on to it. (Sounds good, but come to think of it, I always keep it!)

Given the "generous" quality of my paycheck, if it wasn't O.K. to buy low quality keys, I wouldn't have any!!

as a "per type" colelctor, I rarely need tu buy "key dates" only when the coin has been minted one year or so.. but for "H" mintmark coins of Britan, I sometiems buy the low quality because of the price.. I find nothing wrong in buying low grades for key dates.. If you are missing one and on a tight budget, why not?

Low grade coins of any type should not be collected so just stop now and send them all to me.

Something that can be turned in for a small pittance to make up for slaving your adult life away...

over 90% of my key dates are in G4 or below I have usually been lucky enough to pick them up at a significant discount I think any coin with a mintage of under 100,000 is fairly unique no matter what its condition. Most of my non core key dates have issues such as cleaning or damage but they are just as well loved as those in their plastic coffins.

As already said, buying keys & semi key at reasonable prices is completely acceptable

Key dates in ANY grade are fantastic investments. Sometimes it's even a better idea to pick up AG3 and G4 keys as these will go up on a percentage basis as their higher grade counterparts not to mention, there is a larger collector base for such coins come time to sell(when it comes to keys, most collectors just want one or need one).
I purchased a 1916-D Merc PCGS AG3 a few years ago and it has gone up in value nicely. I know very few folks who have this coin in MS63FB!

MGT As you might have noticed, I am on the rampage for Buffalo nickel lately. I bought a 1921 S for around 120.00 as that is all I could see spending on it. You can read the date easy and see the mint mark and it is slabbed and graded by PCGS. While I bought a 1924 S for $21.95 last night in VG it would cost well over $1.000.00 in XF. I try to buy the best coin I can afford at the lowest price I can find that I like to look at.
I really think it is important that you like the way the coin looks to you.

To help complete my restored Buffalo collection, I recently purchased a 1918/7-D restored Buffalo because I liked the way it looked. It has a nice date with overdate visible, and the price was right. I doubt I'll restore one anytime soon. I try not to purchase non-original coins, but sometimes when it comes to keys, I make an exception if the price is right.

with every one that these are great investments. Some times Lady Luck plays a role when buying what one considers a lower grade key date coin. I bought this 1948 Canadian silver dollar from the auction pictures ( the ones in black and white ) When I received the coin I was in From the auction pictures there was no hint of the natural toning on this coin and the grade turned out better than I expected. Here are the before and after pictures. Some times good things happen

In all reality that is the most important thing about collecting key dated coins.

British key-date coins sometimes change value, I don't know why but.. a couple of years ago 1920 Florin and 1931 Shillnig was rarer and more expensive, now they are cheaper than what it was offered two years ago
