The toning is interesting, but the overall condition of the coin doesn't warrant it being slabbed.

The toning on your coin looks natural to me. However, I think it would only grade about AU-50 and I don't think you would recover your grading fee if your intention is to resell it. I could be wrong! I would not have guessed that anyone would pay $690 for that MS-60 coin, but apparently they did. I know rainbow-toned Peace dollars are less common than Morgans, but this looks like a case of "a fool and his money" to me...

Peace Dollars are almost never found with colorful, rainbow-like toning. Morgan dollars were stored for decades in canvas bags in Mint and Treasury vaults and that is the way so many acquired their beautiful toning, the Battle Creek Morgans being prime examples. The Peace dollars did not have the luxury of such storage conditions in most cases and when Peace dollars are found toned, it is usually a dull and mottled toning. I would grade your coin AU-55 but it is going to have a definite toning premium if it makes it into a slab.

Your toning looks to be natural and I agree, this coin is an AU coin. I agree with biokemist6 on this one, AU55.

690.00 for a 22 Peace dollar? My collection must be worth thousands, nay, 10's of thousands!

How can people make these outrageous purchases with what seems to me like no research?

Yeah, obviously the purchaser of the ebay MS-60 was buying the coin for the toning. Either that, or it was a shill bid. I purchased my MS-64 NGC toner for $35 on the bay. It's not as extreme as the OP or ebay coin, but it does have a nice red/green/yellow rainbow on the obverse, and I was able to purchase it with basically no premium. However, the seller of this coin had really poor pictures which probably didn't encourage bidding.

I would grade the OP coin at AU-58. If you want to send it in, go for it.

Pay as little as possible for grading, since it's not an expensive coin. In other words, don't use the "Express" services offered by PCGS and NGC. The coin will bring a (possibly insane) premium for the toning, but that market is unpredictable.

No way that gets into anything but a 'genuine' holder. The blue just doesn't look right, especially on the reverse. AT.

The ebay coin at least is mint state, and does have decent color on the reverse, but the money side (obverse) is kind of ugly and reminds me a lot of the stuff gototoning used to make. I don't think that one would holder today, either.

Very nice! Aside from the beautiful rainbow toning - IMO there's a psychological aspect of the PCGS holder that will bring up the value. "He paid to have it slabbed so it must be worth something!"

Are you selling it or keeping it? It would be fascinating to see what it brings on the market. I'm willing to bet 50 bucks at minimum.
