At first, I'd collect a little of everything. Eventually I found myself focusing down on a few countries to collect--mostly things that were overlooked by dealers, such as overdates.

That is exactly how I feel. You collect for your own reasons. You define what constitutes your range of interest and should not be influenced by the subjectivity of others. The personal value of your coins in your collection is only visible in your eyes.

I gladly accept any coin or coin-like entity that I can get my hands on. This includes tokens, medals, bullion etc. Like others here I do focus in certain areas, but I certainly don't limit my collecting. I have never bought a coin with the intention of resale, but I have a tough time passing up a good deal if it is a coin that I don't already have.

There are so many coins out there so how can you really choose?
I have been collecting for a few years now and I still don't have a single set completed!-Not even the State Quarter circulation strikes!
I'm proud of the coins I do have though.

This is great to hear. Everytime I went to my dealer at my old place he would tell me not to bother with the 10 for $1 bin. "You'll never find anything of value in there"

I have three USSR coins and 4 Vichy France coins that say different.

I just found this site to try and trade som of my doubles, but I guess I have to wait until I can post in the trades topics.

Thanks all!! Hope to chat more in the near future.

Interesting, Canadiansailor. I don't want to sidetrack the thread, but what "three USSR coins and 4 Vichy France coins" are they? I've got a coin show coming up next week, and I like looking through the "junk coin" bins too...might give me something to look for.

Sorry to say this but I had gotten mixed up, I have 1 50 Centimes Piece from France 1942. And one 50 Kopeck piece from Russia 1964. I misstook a couple of Colons from Costa Rica as being from the USSR.

You certainly learn alot from organizing your collection, don't you.
As soon as I find my camera, I'll send pics if you want

I've been collecting coins for about 40 years. I was started out as a stamp collector, but I lost interest in that and started filling up coin books.

Now I fill up cigar boxes (another collectible in itself, and the Spanish cedar smells good). Foreign coins in one, US coins in another. Better stuff goes into the safety deposit box. And the best stuff of all goes into my pocket...today a bunch of common and well-worn French decimes. I have a few slabs around, and a few UNC's, but I generally don't consider it a coin unless it functioned as money for a while.

I mainly concentrate on coins from Terra. Currently I have been having fun putting European coinage, that was retired for the Euro, in 2X2s.

(Does anybody else think the King on Spanish coins looks like Bevis?}

5000 staples don't go as far as you'd think. I got a chuckle out of my granddaughter at how jazzed she got when I stapled her school work with my flat-clinch stapler.

Thanks for the information, lots of reading but interesting to see. It looks to me like that may be a mint mark next to the "Francisque" (I hope that is spelled right)

Thanks a bunch.

Hi canadiansailor, just logged in,
yes "the letters LB right of the francisque (Frankish axe) are the designers initials and stand for Lucien Bazor" and "look for ones with a mintmark, the letter B or C to the left of the francisque. These are much rarer and represent much higher values"

looking forward to your next aluminum coin pic
