i have this coin and I have been told that it looked like Siberian also. Is it correct?   |

On the Siberian coins the critters are canine (either wolves or foxes, I'm not sure), yours look like a lion and a unicorn which moves it toward the British isles. I can't really make out what is that on the other side but it doesn't look like a coin, rather a token of some sort.

It's hard to tell for sure since the coin is worn and corroded. It looks similar to the Siberian coins, because the animals are supporting the shield, the arms has a crown on top. Hi 'svslav'. Actually, the animals are Sables. They are a species of Marten which were for their high quality fur and were major source of trade in Russia and Siberia. Thus, they were used on regional arms and the coins (except the Polushka). ~Daniel. Edited by DJB1968

Thanks 'Bryan1315'. That is indeed a 5 Kopek coin. However, I can't tell what the date is because of glare on the shield. Could you possibly take another photo without using the flash? There is moderate wear on the shield design, which is typical for these coins. Overall from what I can see, this is decent grade. Also, could you photograph the edge of the coin? I want to see the edge pattern. Most have diagonal hatch marks, but some of the earlier issues have lettering on the edge.

The coin has hatch marks on it . The date I can not read. Do you know how to get the date out. it is a real thick coin Thank you much

Dan Hi 'deh1952'. If you can't make out any of the digits on the shield, it may be impossible to pinpoint a date. However, if you can get the last digit, you can do a process of elimination. The 5 Kopek coin was minted from 1767-1780. There were also specimens dated 1763,64,66 and a second type for 1767, but these are listed as being very rare, so highly doubt it's any of these. That's one of the problems of Siberian coins, in that the shield design wears very easily because of the high relief, sometimes making the date difficult or impossible to read. ~Daniel Edited by DJB1968

Hi Daniel
The more I look at it the last number on it is a 2 or a 7 about what is it worth do you know. I know it is in good shape for how old it is. Thanks alot. Dan.

If what you said is true, it's either dated 1767,1772, or 1777.Since no coins were issued before 1763 or after 1780, these are the only possibiliies. I hope this helps. ~Daniel |

The prices vary from date to date, and since the exact date isn't legible, it would drastically reduce the amount it would be worth. Krause's catalog is the only readily available price guide, but their prices are well below what that actual prices are, that it doesn't help much. I'm not an expert at grading coins, but from what I see your coin grades a Very Good to Fine condition. As for estimate price, I would guess this would be $60 if it's a 1772 or 1777, and $100 if it's a 1767 (Type 2). Note, these are just estimates and based on my opinion only. You should have it appraised by a trusted professional to get a better figure. Good luck. ~Daniel Edited by DJB1968
