You had/have one smart great granddad. Amazing find. Two of the hardest modern coins to find in one shoebox.

Got both the VDB 1909-S and the 1916-D back from ANACS today... both altered mintmarks. Oh well, back to looking up Morgans and Mercuries.

In the meantime, what are some creative things to do with the fakes?

Thanks, but there are no worries. I was reasonably sure the cent was bad, so that made me suspect of the dime. As grandma says, "a week ago, I didn't even know I had it," so I can't feel too disappointed. It was a new experience to ship it off, and it was fun anticipating it for a week.

Hmmm. I just see a D on a '16 dime or an S on a V.D.B cent and I lose my head. I guess I'm not familiar enough with the diagnostics on these two to go much better than that, but, I will agree, on "keys," one really has to be that careful and discriminating.

you know what, I know these coins never belonged to me, but I feel your pain. I would have them checked again. that is of course if you arent satisfied. but I guess if ANACS is the best, then they are fakes. if it were me, I would get a 2nd or 3rd opinion....
