Buying coins is no hassle for me - I believe very strongly in the caveat emptor concept, so if I buy wrong, it's on me.

Selling, on the other hand, purely infuriates me. I sell excellent coins, with great pics and honest descriptions and grading, on ebay. I get my butt kicked by the shysters who picture an AU and describe an MS67, and get MS62 prices for it. My avatar coin, a solid PL (maybe DMPL) MS64, brought $40.

I've about had it with selling raw Morgans.

When selling coins post the best pictures you possible can. Describe the coins good and poor(if any) points in detail. Always offer money back, if the buyer is not satisfied.Do not try to deceive the possible buyers. It takes a lot of time, effort and money to put your coins for sale. it dosen't do you or the buyer any good if the coin has to be returned.
Offer a fair shipping price. I do not go back to sellers who are asking outrageous shipping charges,no matter how good there coins are.
Treat people as you would like to be treated when purchasing coins.

When buying, Always buy the most coin you can afford. you will never be dissapointed.

What really annoys me are the seller's that take their own coins, slab it in their own plastic (gold tape is optional), and then sell it with no shame as a MS70 or PR70 "certified" coin!

My next gripe goes both ways...I look at a coin and I think it is a MS63. The dealer thinks it is a MS65.

I look to sell that very same coin back to the dealer (as time has passed) and the dealer tells me it is a MS63 and I tell him it was 'his' MS65 coin! Makes you want to scream!

My last gripe. At shows, some dealers REALLY need to take a course on "How to Win Friends and Influence People". Many will not even give you the time of day or they will simply grunt at you.

...until you take out a wad of cash. NEVER-EVER buy the first coin you see at a coin show. Walk the show first, make notes, take into consideration those dealers that grunt at you and then return to buy/sell. That's what I do!

Walking around a show first, as Zak mentioned, is an excellent practice! You can also note who has a crowed table, that's a good sign of a good dealer.

You can also eves drop as move along the tables. Hearing the same dealer month after month say: "no, no, those aren't hairlines, it's just die polish" is a bad sign.

Don't comprimise on what your looking for. A.K.A "alternates." If the show doesn't have what your looking for, chaulk it off. Besides it's never a total waste if you learn something or even if your just entertained in some way. Such as:

Collector: (fresh from wallstreet, clutching blue sheet) "Got any Double Minted Proof likes."
Dealer: "Say what?"
Collector: "Double Minted Proof Likes, you know DMPLs."
Dealer: Oooooh, those Double Minted Proof Likes..."

Or watching people trying to fake out dealers into believing they're vest pocket dealers to get better prices. The first thing they do is leer forever at a silver dollar with a loupe. The first thing a real dealer (table or vest pocket) does it rock it, looking for hairlines.

However, if you just buy a coin because you don't want to beieve you wasted half a Saturday then it is a waste. You've wasted money that can be used in the future when something does come along that you actually want.

I find the incredible hype that some large dealers and some Mints give their coins is a complete turn off. The truth is stretched so thin as to be dishonest to the collector.

I especially hate when the Mint ( Perth Mint) will produce a "Show Special" coin with "Only 5,000 to be released in Australia" (in two shows) without telling you that another 70,000 coins have been sent overseas. (Year of the Rooster Show Special)

When the Mint ( Perth Mint) say a particularly expensive set of 5 Silver coins with "Limited Mintage - Just 2,500 of these Sets will be released." and then a month later release the same 5 designs in gold plated silver coins. (2006 Figures of Note 5 coin sets)

Or that Release a coin and stamp set with "a mintage limit of 7,500" and then later finding out that the limit is only for that "set" and they produced another 100,000 of the coin only. (Yep, Perth Mint again)! (Rotary 100th anniversary Silver coloured Proof 7 stamp set)

I could go on and on, but those who buy Australian coins from the Perth Mint have probably had similiar experences. I think that they believe their "marketing" is still the truth. But, in my book, a "Half truth" is also a "Half lie".

Getting ripped off by some schister is one thing, but when it's a Mint, well, I decided to stop collecting Perth Mint coins.

99% of coin dealers in my opinion are about as credible as used car salesmen and politicians. Many dont even like coins except as a profit vehicle, let alone people!

What bugs me is the grading thing. It is so subjective! What to get graded? What not to get graded?

I'm glad that I've always been connected with that 1%! I check them out for weeks before I make my first purchase. I watch the turnover of inventory, the other buyers. Basically, I do a great deal of homework before I walk into a store and while I'm there. My dealer is very fair, very knowledgable and is now my friend. He's never steered me wrong and will give me a better "deal" if I see something that is not acceptable in my personal collection. He will also hold coins back if he thinks that I'll be interested on my next visit. He isn't pushy at all and makes my visits pure joy. That 1% is a wonderful experience.

You're one of the lucky ones, dsking. I have yet to even find a dealer close to me (but then again, I really haven't been trying too hard). I'm limited to coinshows and ebay. What really annoys me about ebay is those sellers who don't post pics, and think that saying 1888-O Morgan dollar, NGC MS-64 is a sufficient description of a coin.

I certainly understand the frustrations with e-bay. I have not nor have any plans to buy (coins) from e-bay UNLESS I know the sellers such as folks from the forum. I would prefer to see, feel and touch a coin before I purchase it. There are a few exceptions to that rule but, not many. All of those exceptions so far are from folks on the CCF!

I do feel extremely fortunate that my dealer and I have formed a trusting rapport and a great business relationship. I wish there were more of him out there. He's been in business since 1979 and is a truly unique dealer!

My biggest disappointment:

As a young collector, buying coins in "BU" condition, and then years later, when trying to sell, find out the "BU" coins were cleaned!

You can bet this mistake has not been repeated by me in recent years.

I hate the haggling process, and I refuse to participate. If I have a coin I want I ask the price and if it is too high I walk away. If I am selling and the dealer makes me an offer that is unacceptable I walk away. If I make an offer to buy of give my sale price and the dealer declines or counter-offers I walk away. I refuse to play that game and waste half an hour argueing about the value of a coin, I have better things to do.

My local dealer is one of the good guys. He has been honest with me about my purchases and the things I've brought him to look at (for evaluation or sale) and he understands that I won't haggle and I routinely buy there because he makes me comfortable and treats me reasonably.

My other buying annoyances are with the myriad of ebay problems. I am very capable on ebay (10000+ completed transactions) and have learned how to avoid the scams, but the constantly being on my guard against scammers is annoying to say the least.

Why can't ebay sellers:

1)accurately grade their material,
2) list their items with a starting bid somewhere below the actual value of the coin, instead of fishing for one dumb buyer to overpay,
3) charge a reasonable shipping rate and have it plainly stated in the auction,
4) post large clear images of BOTH sides of the coin that are properly cropped and please leave the photos taken from space out of your listing,
5) provide a reasonable return policy which doesn't include a punitive restocking fee,
6) write coherent titles that are informative and descriptive without resorting to unwarranted superlatives and multiple exclamation points and all caps, really, I'm not screaming at you, so please don't scream at me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
7)refrain from using stock photos,
8)stop posting the Collector's universe prices when we all know they are way too high and even then are only meant to apply to PCGS graded coins,
9)be honest about a coins flaws, seriously every coin you sell can't possibly be PQ for the grade, it's not mathematically possible and I just don't believe it,
and finally
10) understand that selling SGS70 coins is simply a scam, there is no other reason to sell them than to cheat people who don't know what they are doing!

Hmmm, that turned into a top ten list so I'll make another one for things buyers do that annoy me. Some of these are in general and others of these are related to my own experiences selling on ebay.

Top ten things ebay buyers do that annoy me:
10) Don't ask questions about a listing with only a few minutes before the listing ends. If you want me to see your question before the auction endes give me at LEAST 12 hours and preferably 24 hours. I am not physically attached to my computer, nor do I care to be.
9) If you win an auction pay for it. PROMPTLY!
8) If there is going to be a delay in payment (this includes mailing me your payment) then contact me to let me know,
7)If I have 500 auctions ending within a week and then 500 more ending the following week please be patient with the feedback process. I am only one person and leaving feedback is exceptionally time consuming, so wait for it, I promise I will leave it for you,
6)if a coin is closely graded to what was described (it was listed as a VF35 and you think it is a VF30) and the seller had good photographs then deal with it! He wasn't trying to cheat you, it was just a difference of opinion, if you don't like it, don't complain or leave nasty feedback, just ask to return the coin,
5)Don't argue with the grading opinion of a reputable TPG Company (NGC, PCGS, ICG, and the pre-2006 ANACS). These services are trustworthy. If you don't like the coin then just ask to return it, don't be a jerk about it,
4)be patient with the post, the USPS isn't perfect and they lose packages every day (so far it's happened to me 3 times, and one package turned up the day after the replacement coin arrived 29 days after it was postmarked). If the seller has a good history of delivering as promised give him the benefeit of the doubt, it is unlikely that he'd risk his ebay reputation to cheat you out of a $10 coin, so give him a chance to fix the problem,
3)Please learn to grade for yourself! At least get the ANA guide and compare the pictures, I just want you to know what you are doing before you look at my auctions, it saves us both a lot of potential headaches,
2)Stop buying overgraded garbage! If the coin has wear and it is blast white that means it is cleaned and worn, stay away. If it is in SGS70 plastic it is overgraded and you are being scammed, run away, those coins are not a cost concious buy they are a joke and we think you're being foolish,
and
1)STOP BUYING FAKES! There is no Santa Claus in numismatics, that means that the trade or bust dollar that the guy from China has for sale for $25 is NOT genuine! People with those kinds of coins know what they have, you are not getting a good deal, you're being bent over the barrel and being laughed at for it!

Nice rant there, Cave Troll. I agree with everything on that list. It's not just SGS, there are plenty of other "alphabet grading services", and they are all scammers.
