I remember a guy that had built a pretty nice reputation on another high profile coin forum about being a straight up guy and even calling others out when they stepped out of line and then one day he got caught. He was toning coins in the PCGS slab (I will not divulge how) and it wasn't a week later this guy pretty much disappeared at least his old nick did and a few others he tried to use but was found out pretty quickly. This guy bought back all the coins he had sold (he didn't need the money he was a medical doctor by trade if I am not mistaken) he just got greedy and found a loop hole where if people see the coin in PCGS plastic then it must be natural toning and no one ever questioned him on it. He went from being a hero to zero in just a few days of it being found out and the word spread on many forums. No matter how strong the temptation is, its just not worth it. In the end he didn't make much money at all because he bought back just about every doctored coin he had created and lost all integrity both in his hobby and in his field because both are integrity based and it was proven he would do anything for the right price

Thank you Metalman...you made my point much better than I did. coins92, I was absolutely not attacking you, or anyone else that posted in this thread. And, my intention was not to call your integrity or honesty into question. The only reason I mentioned lafaa by name, and said I knew he was a good guy, is because we have exchanged posts on the forum and e-mails away from the forum. In short, just because I think positively of laffa, does not mean I think negatively of you, or anyone else, posting their opinions here. The only thing I think negatively of is the topic. And I refer you back to Metalman's post. He stated it the way I wish I had!

Quote: but we all know that CCF members will never cheat anyone Even though that is what we strive for here it is unreasonable to think its the case all the time here. We do try to weed out the bad guys but sometimes they do slip in under the radar. If I am not mistaken there is one thread now about one member that had completed transactions before without problems but his last one went bad and now they have disappeared. Even here you need to use caution because its sometimes after the fact that we find out about these members but I would trust 99.9% of our members with just about anything because usually the members here as metalman has already said do not last very long will weed out the ones lacking the integrity to be a true contributing member here

Quote: Has anyone tried using raw sulphur to try toning a coin. Do you think piling sulfur around the edges of a blast white, clean fielded coin would provide results? Is there any place where a kid my age could by sulfur. I think people would assume I'm trying to make some kind pf explosive contraption.
If you stick around here long enough you would see how many times you ask something like what time is it and you'll end up with about 20 or more answers but they will be on how to build a clock, who invented clocks, why clocks have hands instead of pointers, etc. So to get off the track and try to answer your ORIGINAL question, I would like to ask just how old are you? The reason is if your in high school, just enroll in the Chemistry Class. Usually a lot of it there. Too bad Gilbert Chemistry company isn't around. They used to send out anything you want. You could ask your parents to check out a phamacist. May be able to get you some there. As already noted most match heads are loaded with that too. The wooden ones can be ground up and presto, you have powdered Sulfur full of other stuff though. With the internet the way it is I would think you could just find a chemistry supply house on line that would send you a ton if you paid for that much. And rememeber toning a coin actually makes it a AT coin and not worth much but for an experiment, you might find out what you shouldn't be doing. If you really are interested in AT a coin, you should just check out the Search thing at the top and type in Toning or tarnishing or corroding or Sulfur and on and on and on. If your sort of interested in Toned coins, there is a TC forum for TonedCoins you know.

Thanks Carl, I am 17 and have already taken chemistry. I strongly favor chemistry over every other science, but if I were to ask anyone of the chemistry teachers for even the smallest amount of sulfur I would get the same reaction as if I had walked into the school with a flamethrower. I guess I will look around on the internet. Thanks for answering my original question!

Check your area for an apothecary pharmacy, that is where I used to purchase it when I was a kid. However, I was not using it to tone coins, I had a penchant for experimenting with making my own blackpowder. There is a good reason why I had the nickname Dr Torch when I was a teenager

No need to buy sulfur! Just make your own hydrogen sulfide (H2S), most any rotting organic matter will give off H2S. Just put the coin in a sealed container with an apple slice (not direct contact) and watch what happens over the next few days.

For what it's worth, I'm glad to see this topic--not for nefarious reasons, but because my son and I were talking just the other day about how this type of thing could make a good science fair project. I've seen many science fair projects, but the only coin-related ones I've seen have been about cleaning pennies.
Showing a naturally toned coin along with the results of various artificial attempts would help him to maintain his numismatic integrity.

Showing a naturally toned coin along with the results of various artificial attempts would help him to maintain his numismatic integrity If you try some used college book stores for used Chem books, you may find some really interesting experiments with Copper. On TV somewhere there is a show called She's Crafty. On it this lady used a Copper sheet to make some interesting photo type items. They ended up with a sort of photo of something embedded in Copper placed on a Toned Copper sheet background. It was placed in a dish with cereal, salt and Venigar. Sure wish I copied the entire procedure. For various types of toning effects it should be well worth the time to use the many, many methods already noted on this forum in the past. There have been many mentions of burying a coin in dirt, heating over a gas stove, placing inside a hard boiled egg, soaking in dish soap and allowing to dry in the Sun, spit, table salt and soda pop and even some not to be mentioned methods here. Some work and some don't. Some really mess up a coin too. As to a source for Sulfur I did my usual and just typed in Sulfur for sale in Google. Naturally thousands of results but only a few that acutally sold Bulk Sulfur. One made me laugh since they had 50, 100 and up pound bags of the stuff for sale. First thing I wondered would be exactly what government agency would be monitoring the sale of 500 pounds of Sulfur?

I've got some sulfur,so I'm gonna try this experiment. I have a small bowl that has the bottom rounded up so that an Ike dollar will balance itself. I put just a little sulfur arond the edges and sealed the bowl. I will check out the Ike in 1 month for any changes. By the way, I bought the sulfur at my local pharmacy.
