Are you sure it's not a Magicians coin?

I found one too but, I checked the size with a standard quarter and found it to be the exact same size down to a 1000th of an inch. Mine don't have any sign that the ribs were ever put on and no sign of being machined.

TNT1901, welcome to the forum. Again we will need pics to really tell you what you have. If you could take at least 3 pics (one of each side and one of the edge) we can help you.

I have a quarter that is similar to this description. Mine, however, is not missing the reeding. It has two sets of reeding that are not exactly aligned. It does not appear to be two quarters glued because a stack of two is noticeably taller. It definitely weights more than a single quarter. I have pictures and will try to upload.

Again, we need photos to tell you what you have. Could you shoot some digital photos and post them?

Here are a couple pictures of my assumed mint error.

Does anyone have a name for this type of error?

It's two coins joined together.

Is it a mint error or something else?

That is what is known as a "magician's coin." It is two quarters which have been fused together for one purpose or another. Often this is done in order to create 2-headed coins as well. So, all in all, this is just a novelty and not an error of any sort. And is probably has no value other than 25 cents (50 cents if you can separate the two quarters).

Thanks for the photos. As the others have said, this happened outside the mint and is not a mint error.

Aha! I was trying to figure out the purpose of this alteration, since it's not two-headed or two-tailed. On a guess I put it next to some metal and it has a magnet inside.

Thanks
