SDcoinguy- But part of me doesn't want to make someone pay to have circulating coinage at face value. If anything putting them back into circulation causes me to get my money back and allows me to still be altruistic in a sense.

Archraz - you are not MAKING anyone do anything. these people know what they are getting into. you are simply a vessel.. =D anyway, $200 is $200. selling them WILL bring you a profit. and any profit, is... A GOOD PROFIT... I can understand the time and effort into selling. some have more of a passion than others to sell things. the easy way for me to look at it is again, that $200 is actually $400... if you check (124) This link is not allowed by the Staff DOTcom you can check the base metal values, which I am sure you are aware of. I just hate to see someone miss out on MORE money...

I think that if enough people were trading copper Cents as 'junk copper', this would make the melting bans irrelevant.
Many people who collect 'junk silver' want to possess physical silver specifically in U.S. legal tender coin form, which has its advantages over bars/rounds.

One doesn't " need" Copper to be " legal to melt"......as long as it's traded/sold for a "value/profit" in the form that it's in (coins). Who needs to "melt it" ? ...

eaglefoot- Very true, but none the less, most dealers don't want to mess with them. They really are not the ones hoarding them nor the ones encouraging the hoarding.

If you can get melt value today; do so.
Otherwise, spend them on new coins.
4 of 1; six of one of the other.

Or a Buffalo nickel? Or a variety coin listed in the Cherrypicker guides? There's a market for copper cents, so there is nothing wrong with selling them at a small profit if one has done all the legwork. Obviously anyone can go out and amass a quantity by doing their own searching, but some feel their time is more valuable (and that there's value in buying copper cents) so they gladby pay over face value for these. It's no different than any other commodity or item that can be bought and sold for a profit.

They really are not the ones hoarding them nor the ones encouraging the hoarding Not yet because the bulk and volume needed to make even a small profit doesn't make it worthwhile for dealers. Eventually the day may come, though, and our main silver buyer at our shop is getting ready to make a big position in copper. He has reached his silver goal, and now wants to diversify into copper in the form of Lincoln Memorial Cents and also wants to get a handful of common circulated wheat cents. Him and I have talked at length about this, and the fact that there is so little downside to it (worse case scenario you have a pile of copper cents that are still worth face value).

CoinHunter53562- I totally agree that the bulk is one main reason why dealers don't want to mess with them. I think that this does raise a big issue about a possible discrepancy between the world of dealers and the body of collectors.

In that "future day" to come......how much would it cost to " ship" 748 pounds of "Copper Cents" to a " melter purchaser" ?...or anyone else for that matter ! Would this "future Copper profit" ever REALLY be worth "hoarding" it, when it's all said and done (shipping/handling/packaging/weight/space/effort/time ? ...

Hmm - I like the craigslist idea. Someone could simply come and get them.
