Nohope pointed out the price difference between the US Mint Silver and Littleton's Clad. I may have mistaken a tad. Littleton does include the last Westward Journey Jefferson nickel but, that alone would not make up the price difference. The prices for these are all over the place and it certainly can be added up to convenience for some and not ignorance as some have obviously chosen to call those of us that do purchase (occasionally) from Littleton. Thanks nohope I appreciate your constructive e-mail!

I bought 2 sets of the Saca dollars they had on special a while back. Six coins, 1 from each year P and D mint mixed uncirculated for only $10 no shipping. That was a good deal, but when I got some of the coins they send to you to see if you want them they were priced double Red Book values.Yeah it nis convenient to buy from the but the prices are why I won't. My opinion, Dewayne

I do agree with you Dewayne that their prices are higher. It could have something to do with their highly touted "independent grading service". I just watch very carefully for their specials and other coins that I hope will appreciate greater than Red Book for long term investment. Their gold coins are a prime example of high prices. I do like their quality on the coins that I've specifically purchased...not a dot, not a spec, not a scratch. If there are, I simply send them back. That's why I do like them for some things - the no hastle return policy and ofcourse, the many, many freebies! I won't eliminate them because of their prices...I just watch carefully what I buy like anywhere else.

Buffaloboy rich SNOBS as you call them aren't rich because they want to pay extra for their purchases. Most rich folks are tight wads who MUST get an absolute good deal or they WON'T buy. Thats why they are rich. You won't find many rich folks buying from Littletons!

So true Terry!
laxmaster: Why don't you ask Littleton that question? They have a web site. And then you can report back to all of us with their answer. After 60 years in business they would certainly have some reason to justify their prices. I do know that they are quite easy to work with as I have made several quality purchases from them and will continue to do so...even though some people think that I am "not in my right mind", "don't know the value", am a "rich snob" (hardly either) and "don't know much about coin collecting"...although I've been doing it for over 40 years.

laxmaster, you also have to think about people that do not have internet access and they ordered from Littelton through some magazine or publication or over the phone and they just dont know how to order from the USMINT directly

Off topic: "rich snobs" stare down every last cent. How else do you think they got rich? Of course, someone is bound to have an inheritance, but more than likely they were extremely frugal. Back on topic: The proof sets can be ordered by calling the mint, so internet access isn't necessary. Although it would be convenient to know some prices before calling up the mint.

Well I can say this from experience, my grandfather didnt even know you could order streight from the mint, he thought you had to go through a place like littleton and other places that sent him their catalog's through the mail. So it's cases like I just mentioned that I was refering to earlier. The littletons and tom, dickand hary shops always advertise in just about every numismatic publication available just for the people like my grandfather was

The Term "rich Snobs" can refer to anybdy, but the term "rich" is never ending, a person with a million dollars could be considered rich but he would be considered poor compared to someone like Bill Gates. But "snob can refer to anyone, a "snob" is someone who is selfish and that I don't think, refers to anyone in the forum but when BB stated why people by these overpriced, is not because they want to show off money, I could buy a 09 svdb and stuff it in your face, that would be snobbish. They buy it because, they need it to complete a set or gift it to someone, not to show off in greed. You probably set that out was wrong, BB.
There are many "rich" people on this forum, who are very very nice! TKC!

At least as far as older coins are concerned, there's a lot of people that live in rural areas with no coin shops and no nearby shows, mail order is easy. Littleton certainly is the most well known mail order coin company and many folks have been buying from them for years so there's a lot of trust factor, too. I believe they have a buy-back program, so that's one reason they can charge more. Also, if Littleton says they're going to send you a 1922 Peace dollar in XF...that's what you get. NO rimdings, NO scratches, NO cleaned coins, NO problem pieces...they send nice original coins. That's a positive side that you just can't say about any other large mail order company. Honestly that's got to be worth something, knowing you're paying more but will never get counterfeits or problems. Have you ever sold to them? Wow are they picky lol. Yes they have a big following, and you have to hand it to them, they've been doing it right for a long time. But their prices are sure out of whack with the rest of the coin market. I think their customers aren't typical coin collectors, for sure. tradernick

The only problem I had with Littleton's was that the first few coins they sent to me for "preview" were sent with a postage paid mailer to return them. (I even bought one of the coins.) However, they started coming and I had to pay the return postage. At that point, I cancelled with them. MM

I've purchased two of Littleton's specials: - 7 Unc Sacs for $9.95 (one per year) plus a folder for $1.95 -- free s&h - 10 Unc Westword Journey nickels (complete P&D set 2004-2006) for $2.95 -- free s&h A couple of notes: - It's true that they start to sell you coins on approval, but I cancelled that immediately. - The coins all came in plastic bags marked MS60. As far as I can tell, this is a vary accurate grade -- the Sacs maybe had one Gem BU coin among them. As you would expect, the nickels were nicer. - Looking at the catalogue for most of their stuff, it makes the Red Book look like a discount catalogue.

Another reason some don't purchase from the mint is I think yhey require a credit card. Not positive. Anyway I used to sell proof sets on e-bay to a woman in Alabama who went thru a messy divorce and lost her credit. I became friendly with her thru e-mails and sold direct to her and had the mint send the stuff direct to her. Made her so happy to be the first one to see it.
