31 here. I've been collecting my whole life. I get it from my parents and grandparents. They used to take my birthday and Christmas money and buy junk silver or silver dollars for me. It planted the bug in me and then I actively bought silver whenever I could. By the time I turned 18, I had a large collection and I was able to use it to make a down payment on my house when I was 19. I was sure grateful my parents did this otherwise I probably would not have been able to purchase my house at that age.
I am now married with three kids and we do the very same thing for my kids. They always roll their eyes when they get a silver dollar for Christmas, but someday their little stash will really come in handy for them.

I'm in my 30s now but I started when I was 12 or 13. There was a local coin club I joined so there were a bunch of guys that had been in the hobby forever that were thrilled to have a young kid interested in the hobby and learning from them and getting to see some really cool coins each month got me hooked.
By the way, your poll will give you the average age of someone on this forum. It is probably biased towards the younger end though as the older you are the less likely you are regularly visiting an internet forum. That's not to say that older people aren't here or can't use the internet! Just that a 80 year old is much less likely to do so than a 20 year old.

I am 28 and I have just started in the past few days. Although, I have yet to make my first coin purchase. I guess that would make me a virgin in this area!

One person actually put 75+ don't see myself collecting at that age even though I'm pretty sure I still will.

I'll be interested to see how these poll results compare with the two previous (and now archived) polls, here and here.

Harry, Glad you fessed up. Seemed no one over 50 wanted to stake a claim. I'm 57 with 51 years of collecting experience ... and learning new things about the hobby every day.

Quote: Thanks. I'm the same age as Lafaa, 12. Holy Cow! If I were to guess, I would have thought you to be in your 30s, or at least 20s based on how mature you come across.

Thanks Johnny, I think it's only due to the fact that I always try to use correct grammar and spelling when posting.

Although this poll is somewhat accurate, there is one primary problem with the results. That is it only is for the forums members. At a coin show you usually see a much larger percentage of really elderly types compared to most others. And too, at a coin show there is practically very little of the younger crowd. By this I mean at coin shows most are well over the 50 age bracket and hardly any under the 30 age. Some but few under 40 also. I've noticed this too at most coin stores. Naturally this is probably due to really young individuals don't have transportation to get there. People in the late teens to about 40 are usually busy around a house or with families. A poll on a coin forum may be more accurate since almost any age can participate and even those that are usually busy with homes, gardens, families, etc usually can take a few minutes out to vote. But then too your always limited to this forums members. Would be a better poll is we had several hundred thousand members so get out there and recruit.
