I don't thoroughly endorse ebay either, but if you're selective and don't fall for obscure pics, you can find some decent dealers and coins there. Another thing you can try is right here on CCF. Post what it is you're looking for in the "Want to buy" forum and you should get plenty of responses. |

Of course, that is only available to members who have reached 50 posts and have been a member for 14 days. I personally use ebay a large amount, as dealers around me don't usually have material that I want. I also use the CCF BST section every once in a while. |

Dont let people scare you from ebay. Look for sellers that have great positive feedback for selling coins and stick with mostly slabbed. I have got some steals off of ebay. Now, you can buy raw coins if you know what your doing. I have a friend that buys raw coins and he has made some UNBELIEVABLE deals but has also got burned a couple times buying raw coins. |

Just a quick note about ebay. I keep to the TPG coins when it comes to purchasing on ebay. Staying with Professional Coin Grading Service, by chose. I deal with a few "Favorite Sellers" I can trust. Buying ungraded coins is kind of a crap shoot. The pictures posted of the cions are in my opinion to grainy. And the grade the seller has assigned their coin is built on the sellers opinion! Ungraded coins stick to the coin shows!  |

I have to disagree with Rastatodd. I have many somewhat expensive coins in my collection that were bought raw off ebay. If you know enough about what you're buying then it is usually safe to purchase the coin. Knowledge is key. |

I agree with others that you can buy good coins on ebay, including good raw coins if you are very selective. I have bought quite a number of nice coins on ebay and only had a couple of buys that didn't meet expectation but these were easily resolved by sending the coin back. The key is that it's a lot of work (in my opinion) to buy on ebay. If you buy the first thing you see from a search, you are more likely to run into problems. Usually, I target a particular coin I want. Then I will start watching auctions, often for weeks, to get a feel for what is out there and pricing. Then I start looking to buy and pull the trigger. Sometimes I bid and lose several before I finally get one for my price. I've found if I have any doubts about a coin (was it cleaned, looks off, picture is bad), I just let it go by without bidding or will do a low ball bid hoping to buy a problem free coin at a problem price. I probably look at several hundred coins on ebay for every one I buy. Best regards, Ken |

If the ebay seller has good feedback, clear and concise pictures, and a 7 day return policy; your usually ok. Buying raw keys on ebay can be scary unless you really know what you are doing. I've gambled quite a few times and have made 100s of purchases on ebay in the last few years. Probably 90% of my collection was purchased on ebay. I only got burned bad on one coin so far; and since then I've made sure to do my homework and have more than made up for the loss. The fact of the matter is that there are unscrupulous sellers who sell overgraded problematic or fake material EVERYWHERE. You will find it at coin shops and coin shows as well. Even some of the top TPG slabs are faked with fake coins, so you have to know your series. Lincolns are a very popular series. Learn the diagnostics of the genuine svdb, 1922 plain, and 1914-d; and you will vastly increase your chances of making a wise purchase with these dates. |

My last reply on this thread I referred to ebay as a "crap shoot" (i.e. you take your chances). Those who tout Ebays coin auctions, and the good fortune they had and have done well. I say congratulations. Take for instants the last two purchases I made off of ebay. Both purchases were for Jefferson proofs. Seller one sold me a total of three proofs the second sold me five proofs. The proofs from seller one-two of the three coins had problems-toning and nicks. Proofs from seller two-two of five had the same issues. The auctions these coins were won on not one disclosed the problems that these coins had. All auctions had photos which did not help in disclosing these issues. Both sellers did have a return policy as well as a 100% feedback rating. Coins were replaced with acceptable ones or money was refunded! The troubled proofs were mailed back to their sellers. Both sellers did retain there perfect feedback rating. But in hind sight it was a lot of work for some Jefferson proofs, I could have bought the same proofs at a coin show with a loupe in hand! The old saying still rings true. Buyer Beware! |

I wouldn't say bad things to ebay, just some of their sellers are purposely over graded the merchandise to achieve better selling price. They end up deceiving buyers. I started buying "loose" UNC coins, I was not doing well. Then I decided to buy only Mint sets in cello. It went very well, since no body can slip in circulated coins. Besides, I calculated, it is cheaper to buy Mint sets (bulk) than "loose" (single) coins. I wouldn't trust what they said about the better grade, I stop at UNC only and bid accordingly. I always got good deal bidding on ebay. For price, I based on Grey list, then refuse to bid higher. If I loose, so be it, there are many others coming, I have time. Lately, this forum help me a lot to save time to look for inexpensive coins right before the bid end. I still loose the bid some time, but let it be, there is always other time. Since you started with (Circulated) Pennies only, it (especially the shipping's charge) will be too expensive to buy from ebay. My best bet is to selected from bank's roll. To buy only few rolls are too little for the time you spend. It is difficult to get what you want. But if you buy a good amount, you will get more choice, dates, mints and better grade. You don't have to go back to your collection, and check to replace them with a better grade. You select them right there, be done with it. While you are doing that, ask others in the forum who interested to do the same collectively. Ask their list and give your list to them. That way, you have partners in coin hunting, you double, triple, quadruple or even more your chance for a little more time. If your partners in other parts of United States, you will have better chance to get those mints as well. You have more power collectively. I'll be interested to work with you, but it look like I am not qualified yet. Pretty soon, I will be. Request others to joint in. |

I also think that ebay is a good place to buy coins if you know what you are doing. You can usually get slabbed coins for a better price than you will in a coin shop. If you buy raw coins, never trust the grade that the seller assigns to the coins. I would say that 95% of the raw coins are over-graded on ebay. If you are decent at grading coins and the seller puts up decent photos, you should be able to determine the grade for yourself. Look for the sellers with a lot of positive feedback and who offer refunds. |

I just want to get confirmation about raw coin.
It puzzled me, what people means raw coin. But I think, I figure it out. Is it coin without slab PCGS, ANAC, etc? Not even in cello, mint set. Just want to make sure it is correct what I think.

I don't mind buying things like the new quarter series on ebay, or an occasional coin, but the majority of the time I buy from 5 different dealers whom I have been with for a long time. |
