As mentioned above the Doily ws one of four varieties of "slab within a slab" holders that used the small sized shell from the first genration rattle slab which was then encased within a wraparound plastic band. around the edge. That wraparound band is NOT physically attached to the inner slab, it just wraps around it. So it is lose and can be flexed.

Not worth much. I just sent it out as a freebie on one of my ebay sales this month.

Sounds like this one is missing the "wrap band" which keeps it together.

Not a doily, first generation rattler. Or the first generation of the "slab within a slab" varieties that has had the outer band broken off. Can't tell for sure without seeing the back of the slab.

This one had no outer band when I got it years ago.

How much would a graded Wheat penny in a doily holder be worth?

That is a loaded question...you will need to be more specific; date/mm/condition.

A hand cut doily sold a couple weeks back on ebay.

$609 - a pair of nuclear last minute bids. Seller and both bidders are serious sample slab collectors.

I'll see your 40 megatons and raise you 10.

I think there are only a handful known.

I've always wondered if these were true samples... "Hey, here is what the new label will look like" since the doily was created as a temporary response to the counterfeiting of PCGS slabs. And the 'common' version has the white stripe for the serial #, which could be a response to the difficulty of reading the bar code on top of the doily as seen in the hand-cut ones.

I have a 1942-P Type II Proof nickel in one. I have never quite understood the excitement over them, but some collectors are truly thrilled when they find one. To me the holder is kind of odd and seems less secure. I buy the coin, not the holder or label.

When the counterfeit PCGS holders were discovered, there were several reactions. Up until then the technology (slab) was assumed to be sufficient proof of authenticity.

PCGS changed the label to a more secure one (the microprinted dots that make up the doily were of a size and in a color that photocopies of the day couldn't image). And the 3rd piece (ring) was added to prevent the slab from being pried open (although I've seen no proof that it could have been).

But those were interim measures until the two piece slab became available, so the doily in a three piece holder was a short term item. Surrounded by the far more common rattlers and common green label 2 and 3 piece holders.

FYI- the post-doily green label was equally hard to photocopy.
