WOW places like this should have charges brought against them.

I still remember the wife paying on the HSN like $500.00 for a Sacagawea collection for me for Christmas it was the thought that counts but still makes me mad at how these people rip people off.

It is nice to see someone in the media writing about such worthless things and calling them what they really are.

When I came back from the Philippines, my grandpa (who actually got me started on collecting) excitedly told me that he had purchased the complete state and territory quarters, uncirculated, with albums for each of his 12 grandkids for Christmas. He spent over $1000...

I saw this article at work today and had to agree. The way these coins are mass produced, they will most likely never be worth anything more than a dollar. It is better to get them at face when stopping by the bank.

This article should be required reading for new collectors.

bocephus, you see them on HSN and a couple others, actually. They're really quite disgusting when you know what's going on and the people they may be taking advatage of. Especially when they sell plated coins, which is ultimately PMD IMO.

And, that commercial with the gold buffalo with "copy" so well hidden in the indian's feather where they can only guarantee the price for one week, for about 6 months now, really makes me sick.

This should be a popular sentiment!

I originally stayed away from this topic but after reading the latest posts I find that I cannot. I WILL stick to the short version though.

I have noticed a prevalent trend on these forums. An elitest attitude about "coin collecting." What I have read in this thread is just about the top of the heap.

Contigent concepts of this thread are;

The Danbury Mint is selling a product (coins) for much more than its value.
The Danbury Mint is "gouging" people and "ripping them off".

According to who? You? Since when do You make the rules?

Here's an additional concept to toss in here:
Every person who collects coins is not a "coin collector".

At least, not a "coin collector" based upon the standards that seem to apply here.

And this extends beyond this particular thread into others which include any televised selling of coins, and coins sold online through ebay and such.

Yes, Danbury Mint is selling something for more than a "percieved" value, and granted, above "face value". It may not be your "cup of tea" but I really fail to see how this rises to the level of my favorite quote from this thread;

Quote:
WOW places like this should have charges brought against them.

For what? Selling a product? Making a profit? Making available a product that many people would not otherwise have "practical access" to?

We could extend this concept to many other things (like cars, for one) but we'll stick to the topic at hand.

Sure, anybody can walk in a coin store and buy some stuff. Only certain people do that. Go ahead, put together, YOURSELF, what TDM is offering and let's see how "easy" it was for you to accomplish, and at what cost. Yeah, Suzy Homemaker is really into doing THAT for her hubby! Or for her dad, or for her son, ad infinitum.

So let me see if I got this straight; The Danbury Mint is a crook and Suzy Homemaker is stupid. That about cover it?

It is certainly heartening to know from reading posts here over many months that no "coin collector" here has ever paid more than the "accepted value" of any coin or coins.

And probably never got "gouged" on a car of a house or a ________ either.

Or any other "such worthless things".

Thought provoking Whytlash.

I don't necessarily think anyone should have charges brought against them, and after reading about the grandpa that bought for 12 grandkids, you bring up some very valid points, and turning a profit is the American way.

No, everybody's way. Thanks for the different perspective. I think that's why most of us are here. To learn and open our eyes and minds.

I personally would still not buy any of the products that have been mentioned, but I certainly won't condemn them anymore for doing so, especially if Suzy were buying the set for me. In that particular case, it is the thought, not the money.

I'm not changing my stance, I'm just more open to another side I had not considered before. Thank you.

Thank you for your response Scooby. I appreciate that you get the gist of what I'm on about. True enough, as I've "matured" as a coin collector (not just a collector of coins) I've become more educated, and more discerning about my "passion". I have bought from the tv shopping networks before, but as I gained knowledge and got deeper into coin and currency collecting I found other venues that offered me the same merchandise, and some of the same broadness of variety. And at better prices.

Although Suzy never buys me squat, my mother does. She's a QVC and HSN junkie and she enjoys buying me coins from them. I graciously accept her gifts. Yeah, I'm gonna try to explain the dynamics of the coin market and what HSN has to offer and why you can get that cheaper somewhere else and make it more difficult for her so I don't get squat! It's not a money matter for her. It doesn't even put a dent in her investment portfolio. It gives her pleasure. And it's not THAT big of a rip. They gotta pay for that show, and they have to sit on MILLIONS of dollars in stock. And pay all their people. And so on and so forth.

What I don't appreciate is people that defiantly state that those people are crooks and people who buy from them are idiots.

To such a mindset MY mind thinks

"Careful there pal, there may be someone you know who thinks you're an idiot for what you paid for that new car from that crook."

I think the channel I fell asleep with was something like NATGEO or HIST; because I do not watch HSN.

I dont know all about whether these infomercials should be sued, stopped, whatever.

During my first week in college Economics 101 is where I recall I first heard the business axiom, "Create the need or desire (perceived or real) and they will buy it."

I reckon I was probably 10, 11, or 12 when I got my first "caveat emptor" lesson.

Hey, some people put them in Air-Tites & 'mahogany' boxes,
others put them into car washes and parking meters!

As for 'creative marketing', how about: DNA buys a 1926-S Peace dollar
at a coin show, paying $25 with 25 BU 2009-D Native American dollars.

45 minutes later, I see this dealer selling three of those same coins,
to a man and his two boys, for $1.25 each! The dealer put them in his
case, with a handwritten sign saying "BU 2009-D Sacagawea dollars - $1.25 ea"!

And that 'deal' didn't even involve Air-Tites and 'mahogany'...

Rest in Peace
