Haha - that is bad nohope, has it been stamped onto another similar size coin or did they create this masterpiece from scratch ;)

I agree with you about the 50p's molydeii - Its all gone very quite about the Olympic 50s, I hope they dont screw it up. It'll be a shame if they do as I think it will be a nice touch for the people who come to the Olympics to find them in change and take them home rather than having to buy uncirculated ones for no doubt £5+ from RM.

You seem to know a lot about fakes - is that the main area you are interested in?

Hi Bobby, no my main area is not fakes at all, I just have travelled a lot over the past several years and I tend to keep fakes made for circulation, I've got a vast Turkey lira, Euro and Pound colelction, and even have several other fakes intended for circualtion. I will take some pictures for this thread sometime today - hopefully.

My main area of colelction is post-1816 UK Coinage and post-1923 Turkey coinage. I also do some euros, some mint sets, Turkey commemoritives, pre-Euro European coinage (especially French), Russian and US and Canada.

Just thought id bring this back - I looked for fakes and got 10% (2 fakes in 20).

And RED - you've got a fake £1 that I reckon was faked by the same scum that faked one of the £1 coins I've dragged out of circulation.

Oh - and if I see it, I pull it from circulation. Someone has to.

I have two of them from my mom's old collection - in Canada. There are TONS of them, and some are pretty good.

The thing is, its almost got to the stage where the general public accept fakes as part of the coinage. I've no doubt at all I've spent a fake at a shop. Hell, I've probably even banked some and had the bank accept it.

At some point someone has to 'take the hit' for all these fakes floating around.

Am I right in thinking that eventually the mint would have to 'buy' these from the banks in order to own them so they could be destroyed and replaced?

It's would probably be the government rather than the mint who'd take the hit.
Maybe the government is already pulling them from circulation and accepting the cost. Maybe the mint could reuse the metal though.

They seldom ever use the correct metals - lots of odd colours and weird weights. You couldnt reuse them - some might be different metals in the core!

I think the general populace should be more encouraged to filter them out. No-one takes them out - its too much trouble when they are so very common.

Im yet to find a fake £2 though. I dont go through many though so Icant say much for it.

I received a fake £2 coin in my change at Greggs the bakers, at the time I wanted to get rid of it so I re-entered Greggs and bought something else with it. I sort of wished I kept it now.

You can see from this thread why criminals find faking £1 coins so worthwhile. Noone bats an eyelid at getting one, spending one or banking one!

I got a fake 2005 one pound coin today in the change and amazingly yesterday I got a fake 1993 coin which was very shiny for coin allegedly "minted" in 1993 ! What amazed me about the 1993 coin was how detailed the coat of arms was and the lettering on the side. Its amazing how the forgers really put an effort into making it look so authentic compared to the fakes that are usually made by lazy forgers who cant even match the year and designs correctly !!
