jedi,
In Canada, I can just go to a bank and pick up a box of coins (not 50 cents though - it's no longer a circulating coin.).
What's the procedure to order a box of halves in the States? Is there a handling charge?
Thanks

pennylover1010,
It varies by banks. I use Chase here in Louisiana and they don't charge anything as long as I have an account. Develop a good relationship with your tellers and they will be more willing to order for you.

so far I've never been charged for buying or ordering coins from my banks. the first box of halves I ordered was from a wachovia. they had just been bought by wells fargo (where I have an account) but didn't even ask if I had an account with them or wells fargo. my wells fargo has never charged me for any boxes I've gotten that they've had on hand. and I didn't get hassled when I asked if they could order me a box of halves. I've heard stories of others getting charged though. not sure what banks they've used.

The "procedure" (for me) is simple. I say, "can I order of box of half dollars?" the reply was, "sure, it will be here wednesday. is that okay?" of course, wednesday turned into monday when I went to pick them up and found they had ordered dollars instead of halves. so then the conversation went something like this..."would you like us to reorder the halves for you?" "yes, please." "okay, they'll be here on monday, is that okay?" "yeah, monday will be perfect."

I'm going to be in Manhattan for a week in June. I might try to get a box. It might be harder not being an American!

so assuming my box is there to pick up later today, all guesses should be considered "in" as of this post. in other words, no guesses after this message will count. i'll post numbers once all is said and done. wish me luck!

Okay folks, i'll keep it short because I'm quite unhappy with my bank. for the second time in a row, they failed to order my box of halves. I'm looking around for another bank to order them for me.

Does this mean there is no contest or is it opened back up for whenever you find a box.

I will guess a total of 9 silver halves in your next box.

1 90% & 8 40%

Good Luck

Okay I have an update...good news/bad news:
I was told my box would be arriving today. They even called me yesterday to let me know.
First the bad news: a full box didn't arrive today. My teller and manager told ,e they did get SOME and that the remainder would be arriving on Tuesday. I thought it was odd that brinks wouldn't deliver a full box.
She said I could either wait til Tuesday for the full box or take what they had now, which was $350 and come back for the rest. I said i'd take everything now and come back Tuesday. So that's the bad news, contest is AGAIN postponed until a full box arrives.

Now the good news:
They brought out the $350 and it was all CWRs. 30 were actually loose and in a small envelope. I got them to the car and peeked inside. MONSTER score. only 1 90%, but 27 40%s. Out of the whole bunch, only 1 NIFC (a 2007). These numbers won't count towards the contest as it is based on a full brinks box. I'm not sure why they had these CWRs, that they seemed to imply were delivered. Unless maybe brinks delivered them without processing them (ie counting and wrapping). Anyone know if this would ever be the case?
