The coin is either MS-65 or AU-58.
How is that possible you ask? if what I see is rub it is 58 if it strike weakness it could still make 65 even though I would be tempted to grade it at 64 because of the hits on the reverse lettering ,shoulder, lapel and field in front of the nose.

I'd love to see that coin in hand to see the beautiful toning.
It is a 1916, yes...however, I hesitate to go MS65; particularly as the value doubles between 64 and 65.

I fail to see strike weakness on this coin. Having said that I cant detect any rub either. Based on the photos it appears MS to me.

I think Rick is looking at the top of the ear and the very back of the collar. Might be either strike or wear and is hard to tell. I tend to agree that there are enough nicks on the coin to grade it MS-64. Still, a nice raw coin. Jim

First off, thank you everyone for the comments! Okay, I have studied this coin extensively under both natural and artificial light. There is no scratch above Abe's shoulder. However, there is a light tiny scratch above and behind his eye, in front of his mouth, above the second 1 of the date, and on his coat (as can be seen in the pic). The reverse is virtually flawless. The coin has a glossy original, almost wet look, accented by this very light electric blue hue on both obverse as well as reverse. As far as the strike, I am still convinced that this coin has all the technical merits of an MS65BN coin. It could go MS64BN and I am not at all ruling that out. I do believe there is some strike weakness here and there but overall, a really nice coin.
