I've got a follow up question. What should I do with it if it is a fake?

It's still worth ~$13 in silver, maybe a little more to someone with an interest in Trade dollars or fakes or whatever. I think I'd be ok selling it as a "copy" but there's nothing stopping somebody from buying it from me cheap and reselling it as real for a nice profit.

If it is a fake, I'd like to minimize my loss but I certainly don't want to be a part of tricking somebody into overpaying for a fake.

What do you think?

I'd keep it as a reminder and chalk it up to a learning experience. If the weight is right, it still might be worth sending in to ANACS for a professional opinion with the coin in hand...or have a local dealer look at it. If it turns out to be fake and you're going to sell it, you have got to be really careful and only sell it to someone you trust that wont turn around and abuse it.

isn't it illegal to ship fakes across state lines?

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't buy a raw Trade dollar on ebay and have shied away from buying raw classic coins, particularly those costing over $150. Way too many fakes and damaged coins out there---- plus I sense that the TPGraders are being much more stringent and defer many close calls to NCS or "Genuine." Would only buy expensive or classic US coins raw if you have no interest or concern for possible future sale.

What do you think about getting a set of cheap letter punches and stamping "copy" into the surface?

It's an interesting idea. I'd have to be really convinced that it's a fake. I hate the thought of doing that to a nice real classic coin. I'm always annoyed by holes in coins but that's beside the point.
If I was sure it's a fake, I probably still wouldn't do it. I could spend a few bucks (I'm guessing) on stamps and salvage maybe $10. I think keeping it around to remind myself not to be dumb might be worth more than $10.

Yeah, definitely make sure it's fake first. TDColl is very knowlegable about Trade dollars, so his concern is valid, but we can only tell so much by looking at a picture.

That's what I was thinking, TD... - though prfiddle, I equally liked your idea of melting it, if you send stuff off to melt often, may not be bad.

Though if you have an interest in it, keeping it and comparing it with a genuine as TD did and spreading knowledge with people is a great use as well! If I were to do that, I'd probably etch "COPY" or "REPLICA" in it.

I just weighed it. It's 27.07g (supposed to be 27.22g). That's 0.5% light. I'm guessing that's close enough, right?

Yeah, you know, given that weight I'd be tempted to send it in - or at least take it to a shop that knows Trade dollars =)

I really think you should send it in to a TPG. Unless someone suddenly chimes in with an solid evidence of it being fake you won't know for sure. Given the value of a Trade dollar I think it is worth paying for a TPG to look at it.

I have a 1877 trade that is fake that looks just like that. the reason I know its fake is that when you look at the obverse and flip it from top to bottom the eagle on the back is upside down.It should be right side up.

You can see if it's magnetic (any household magnet will do) and/or do a specific gravity test on it. Search the forum for "specific gravity" for the instructions on how to do that.
