Thank you for your answer. You are right, the picture was taken from a catalog.
May I ask? I thought that a reasonable bid for this was about 80 euros. Do you think that it is a good offer?

Personally I wouldn't take 80 Euros for this coin with this much detail. If I were selling and EF-40 I'd expect 180-200 Euros. If you got one like this for 80 you did very well.

Provided the coin is problem free of course.

I'd go lower, probably a VF20 or VF30 as per:

and priced around CAD100 as per:

I think you need to add contrast to that picture to understand what I mean abut detail.

Thank you for your replies. I will make an offer. The auction ends on 1st July. I will let you know if I win this coin.
I have another question. I use as a reference book the Charlton's Canadian Coins. Is it good? Even for pricing tables?

Pricing not so good, in terms of reference it's the everyday standard. Most coins sell below what they list but not all.

I didn't win the auction. It was sold for 138 euros.
I brought home a 5 cents 1874. I need, if possible, some help with grading it. It is in a new topic. Thank you

I'd say VF-30 tops, it just isn't sharp enough to be an EF.
The selling price is probably about right, assuming it isn't cleaned
or marked up with a bunch of little scratches. It's hard to get full
book value for 20 cent pieces these days, and the Euro has lost a lot
of strength against the CAD.

MrC, there was a well researched article in the CN Journal sometime last year I believe,
which concluded the existing population may be quite a bit lower than that even.

I wrote the article. It was in one of the Canadian Numismatic Journals from last fall. I just don't remember whether it was Sept, Oct., or Nov.

That coin has a very good strike on the reverse.
Good detail on obverse'
Charlton has a half page devoted to the grading of 1858 coins--Pagexviii-ed.63

Rob turner's article proves the total survivor count is approx. 7300.
That equates to roughly 1 coin per 1,800 households in Canada.
This is 2009 information and all pricing should jump as the information spreads.
