I didn't mean that this particular seller is gonna run away with money but in general that if somebody transfer his money from Paypal to his bank account then ebay will not be able to force refund.

NO, I decided to pass on it. I really liked it except for that rim damage.

I'll say it again and then a million more times:
NEVER BUY A KEY DATE COIN OVER THE INTERNET!

Anytime someone on scambay offers a coin with "no returns accepted" or "all sales are final", that's it, move on, especially if it's a key that is not certified by either PCGS or NGC. I have to disagree with Thad on this one. I have purchased keys online with great success. I have never bought a key of this caliber on scambay.

NEVER BUY A KEY DATE COIN OVER THE INTERNET! Even from someone you know here? I'd be skeptical to buy from a stranger on ebay but I trust most everyone here.

yea, other than the forum, I only buy lots (assuming they are all common), Silver for melt, and other low end stuff.
Plus, I like going to stores, interacting with dealers, and once you develop a good rapport with dealers, often times they hook you up.
I like the thrill of the hunt, not the wait of the mail.

Quote:He's an established ebay seller with 100% feedback. Would be odd for someone like that to take the money and run away from ebay on a $600-$700 coin. He appears to be an estate liquidator. He could unknowingly put a faked coin up for auction. If it came from an estate collection its interesting that its not in some sort of holder. I would stay away from estate liquidators and pawn shops. They probably don't know coins beyond looking up the value in a book.

My main point is that buying a key is a very important decision. You should LOVE the coin before you drop big money and to love a coin you must see it in person with your own eyes. It's a big deal considering it's your collection, your money and it may be something you'll have a very long time. Sure, lots of people have bought them over the internet and are pleased. But, why not take your time and search dealers, shows or wherever, for the magic coin? Are we in a race? I don't know about everyone else, but I clutch onto $1000 or more pretty tightly. LOL I just have to see it with my own eyes before I'll let go!

... but the placement of the mintmark looks legit...

I remember reading about The Lincoln V.D.B. coin. I believe the alignment of the "S" mint mark tens to wonder a bit under the date of this coin. Like Darth Anarchus has posted on this thread, the alignment on this coin is what was written about in the story of this coin. If my vote counts, I vote legit!

I understand your point, but I'm not sure this applies in all cases. The obvious disadvantage to internet purchases is not being able to view the coin in hand. That is valid, but there are some major advantages to purchasing over the internet: -It opens the door to a MUCH larger pool of coins to choose from, since you can have instant access to coins all over the United States. From ebay to Heritage and teletrade. -Many key date auctions go for a significantly better price than purchasing from a dealer direct(not always, but many times). -Also, some people don't have the ability to go to shows/dealers, either because of there location or disability. -If you purchase from a seller that offers a no ask full refund, you really don't have much to lose. Especially since you can examine the coin under your own lighting and timing and share pictures with other experts over the internet before you totally seal the deal. Of course, the general rules for internet purchases apply to key dates such as TPG certification, stellar seller reputation, and rock solid return policy. Just offering another point of view, though I totally understand what you're saying badthad. In the case of this coin, I would never buy a raw svdb like this off of ebay since there are wayy too many fakes.

Hey....to each his own. I consistently get the lowest prices/best deals at coin shows. Every once in awhile I'll get a decent deal over the internet, but it's not as consistent as shows. This is especially true with key date coins which are routinely over-bid on the internet. Plus, I'm able to hold and see the coins I buy.

I have to throw my support for coin shows. I am spoiled by the ability to have a coin in hand when I purchase it. This is not to say that I will never buy online, but that I am still having success with coin shows and see no reason to change my behaviour yet.
