You guys saying MS63, are you saying that because of the black spot on the reverse? (just trying to understand grading better)

I think your pics are playing tricks. I'm going to assume in hand it's a different story, I can see why metalman said what he did....but I don't always trust pictures. LOL MS-63 and one half.

MS64BN. Might just be me, or the photos, but something about the surfaces of this coin bother me.....

I think its the lighting as the surfaces of the coin do not look bothersome in hand and ANACS graded it problem free. Its actually an attractive LWC in hand. However everyone has overgraded this Lincoln as Anacs only gave it MS61BN. Personally I cant see why this coin graded MS61 as there are not a whole lot of hits like you would normally see on an MS61 coin. Maybe the same concerns you all are expressing regarding the surfaces are why they graded it MS61

WOW, that's a tough grade! Not sure if an AU-58 wouldn't have been a better grade. They must not have liked the surfaces because it's pretty free of hits from I can see. Tell you what, sometimes ANACS can be very conservative. Usually 60 and 61's are pretty horrible, this coin doesn't look that bad IMO.

Is this in a new holder or the old holder? Is it worthwhile to cross grade it, maybe crack it out...

Its in an old holder.
Its not worth cross grading IMO. There's not much to gain even if it goes from MS61 to MS63 which is about as high as I would expect this coin to go.

Sorry,I didn't mean to dis the coin, but I have seen many toned lincolns and the only ones I have seen with the colors in the field like this one had been cleaned and either chemically retoned or retoned by a storage method that promoted toning.
It could be the way the light is hitting it or the way the camera caught it or even the plastic tomb it is in , but when I looked at it this morning that is where my mind went.
Lets just say anacs and I disagree on this particular coin even though I did only give it an MS details grade. ;-))

Quote: Sorry,I didn't mean to dis the coin Yeah absolutely no offense taken and given the lighting I can see where you would think this coin might be re-toned. I bought this coin off of teletrade so just for the heck of it here are the pics from there online auction.

MS61? I think they missed the grade on that one. It's like they couldn't decide between AU and MS so they took an average.

That's a very nice coin JimR! One thing I have noticed with TPG grading sometimes is that a very clean and lustrous coin with just the slightest bit of rub on the devices will receive a lower MS 61/62 grade instead of an AU-58 if the luster in the fields is unbroken. I have a PCGS MS-62 Barber dime that is practically mark free with full luster in the fields but broken luster on the devices. Not sure if that's what happened here, but I really like the look of that coin!

Thanks Johnny. It is a nice looking LWC in hand. Quote: I think they missed the grade on that one. It's like they couldn't decide between AU and MS so they took an average. Thats as good an explanation as I can come up with as well as to why this is MS61

Quote: I think they missed the grade on that one. It's like they couldn't decide between AU and MS so they took an average. I bet that is what happened. That's what "market-grading" is to me. Seems like a 63 easy but if some high point rubs (cheek & wheat tips) go as wear, then it's really a 58. I believe NGC came right out and published that they are "market-grading" and though this is ANACS, it sure like an example of that.

I think the pics from Teletrade are better. Definitely MS, maybe 63.
