Congratulations people, this is a new style of fake slab and the first of this type of ANACS slab that I have seen. I wish the pictures were better but that seems to be a common practice of people selling fake slabs. This one is fairly obvious but I suspect that will not last and future versions will be more deceptive. These ANACS slabs are not his only fakes. I'm pretty sure that the common moderns and common raw indians he has been listing in one day auctions are all real but I believe all of his raw older type coins are fakes as well. I know the 1850 Half Cent currently listed and the Half Dimes and 1822 cent in his completed sales are fakes. The 1822 cent is rather scary. I don't know why it didn't sell. It would probably fool most collectors and dealers. http://cgi.ebay.com/1822-LARGE-CENT...em3f01309e40Looked some more, the 1872 Two Cent, 1840 O Half Dime, the 21 S buffalo, and 1893 O half are all fake as well.

For knowledge sake. How can you tell about the 1822. I've spent about 10 minutes string at it and can't tell. (not very good at identifying fakes to begin with.)

I wonder about the 1921s buffalo by the same seller? Decent 21s if it's real. How does this seller continue to do business? Will they be shut down? Of course I realize they will be back under a different name anyway.

Yea, some of his fakes are pretty good ones, the only way I noticed the V nickel was the mintmark was backwards, but the slab is a dead giveaway since ANACS did not issue slabs with that background. The 2-cent is a good one too.

Quote: For knowledge sake. How can you tell about the 1822. I've spent about 10 minutes staring at it and can't tell. There are 14 different varieties in 1822. On all of them the star at the point of the coronet points either AT the point of the coronet, or to the left of the coronet. None of them point to the right of the coronet. Darn, they've pulled the 1822 auction. I should have saved the image, that was a quality fake.

Now this is a classic example for all the members here that say ebay couldn't care less about fakes. Here's the email I sent to ebay.com/ccw last night about 10PM... Quote:Lot of fakes from this guy, but this one is the most obvious. Look at the reverse photo in the description, the mint mark is backwards! Discussion is here... https://goccf.com/t/67881This seller really needs to be canned unless account was hijacked. Thanks! Here's the reply I got 10 minutes ago... Quote:Thanks for reporting this listing to us. I investigated this listing and confirmed that it violated our Selling Currency policy. Additionally, the seller has been suspended. Again, thank you for your report. We appreciate your help in keeping ebay a safe and reputable forum to conduct business. Sincerely, Heidi ebay Customer Support Here's the result.... http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...=AllFeedbackQuick, somebody tell me again how much they don't care.

I don't know Chief, but I just looked at it and the seller is NOT A REGISTERED USER, and has no items listed.

Additionally, looking further, all of their sold items have been pulled also.

Can you guys tell me the US collector experience with fake coins and fake slabs?
I'm an Australian dealer and we're only now seeing higher quality fakes flood the market. There were several concerned dealers at the last coin show. Moreover, fake Australian coins are now appearing in fake slabs, and it's got the whole market concerned.
What's the US experience with fakes, and what are your thoughts on the future of the industry?

I agree with scubu. ebay is usually pretty effective at pulling coins that are fake. Sometimes it may take a while to respond, but they have millions of auctions to deal with at any given time.
