If I ever spent that much on a cent it'd have to be a sure investment. It's a pretty one!

Thanks everyone! I think I now have a taste for early MS Lincolns, and the strike and eye appeal made me buy it. I'll post updated pictures when it arrives.

Your story and capture made me look hard at the good old slabbed 09vdb's again. I've wanted one for a long time because I really like that coin and have several raw, a couple of MS and a few more below that. Well, I found a seller that had two going off within minutes of each other, an MS64RB and an MS64RD. I watched both and today was was the countdown to liftoff. I decided I'd go with the RB (it went off first) and threw $65 at it with a few minutes left to go. A couple people nailed at it in the last few seconds and it went off for $66. Okay, I really wanted the RD anyway. Threw $90 at it in the last few minutes, and a couple people nailed at it in the last few seconds and it went off for $71! My wish has come true! Thanks for the "push" to do what I've always wanted to do. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...TRK:MEWNX:ITHe's also got a 65RD that ends in 6 days. That money I'll throw at some other time I'm sure. For now, another Lincoln joins the fold. Steve

Wow, nice 09 VDB, Whytlash, and you got it at a great price! I'm thinking of starting a mini-hoard of slabbed 1909 VDB's, or maybe just a bunch of early Lincolns...
Either way, I really like the look of early MS wheat cents.

Nice coin and does look close to full red. These wholesale for $50 and retail for $70 so you did well. Let us know how it looks when you get it!
P.S. I think BadThad was pricing an MS64RD, not RB.

Thanks! Yeah, just checked my Greysheet and MS64 RD Ask is $85. Looking at past auctions 09 VDB's in 64RB go for around $45, so I think I slightly overpaid, but I think the eye appeal and possible beard detail may add a bit to the price.

Quote: Looking at past auctions 09 VDB's in 64RB go for around $45, I got the $50 and $70 price from Heritage. They are great for checking archive prices and current wholesale/retail pricing for almost any U.S. coin. If you not a member of Heritage Auctions you should sign up because it's free.

Thanks Mr. Wheat! (You know, that's Buck's last name!) I didn't want to horn in on your thread, but it was your fault. If you hadn't posted about that fine looking RB I wouldn'a dunnit! But since I went and did it, I had to give credit where credit is due. Interesting about the pricing. Numismedia has RB at $70 and RD at $90. I'm happy with it, and although PCGS calls this one RD, I've noticed sometimes there is not a lot of difference in what they call an RB. But, you CAN tell the difference. Your RB and the one I lost out on are both very good looking specimens. I would have been happy with the RB at $65, but I'm happier with the RD at $71. I'm glad everyone chickened out at the last minute! On a tangent note, I've always thought it would be way cool to put together a roll of them. Something like VF and higher. I'll get to work on THAT one reeeeeeal soon. Steve

Oops, I looked at ebay completed listings, not Heritage. I'm a member, although I have yet to buy anything there. I should start checking both Heritage and ebay then. Thanks Mr. Wheat! I'm kinda thinking of starting a date set of wheat cents from MS-64 and higher, although that would be a difficult set to put together..

Quote: P.S. I think BadThad was pricing an MS64RD, not RB. Yep, CDN is RD pricing. Nonetheless, a slabbed coin brings some premium so his deal was fine. It's fine to use ha.com prices but you have to remember the buyers premium.

Very nice pick-up for $60! Quote: It's fine to use ha.com prices... Thad - The ha.com archives are great but I use their wholesale and retail price guides that are included with most every listing to get prices too. It's almost like a free Greysheet! Edit to add quote.
