At least what you find is tax free income :) Found a SBA once - guess whoever threw it didn't think it was "real" money. Picked up a penny in front of my boss once - didn't help me get a raise :(

You also have to factor in the time to either exchange the pennies for notes, or to spend said pennies at a store, since it will take the cashier forever to count them...
Personally, I do not pick up pennies unless it is a wheat.

You're not making any money if you don't pick it up.
Anyway, how can a coin collector not pick up a coin from the ground?! You never know if it might be a treasure.

Perhaps, but my experience tells me that you are more likely to find treasure, and the treasures are better in a dealer's junk bin then in from a random non-wheat penny on the ground.

Do you pick up the face-up ones that you can't tell are wheats or not?

I cant help but pick up change I find on the ground. I always tell people who ask me why,
"Would you pick up a dime if it was on the ground?" "Yea" "What about 10 pennies, if they were all right next to each other?" "Yea, probably" "So why not 1 penny, 10 times?"
I usually just get a "huh, good point" from them. LOL

You're right, wolf, it's $12/hour. Typo! I got curious about the actual time that it takes, because I do pick up Cents from the ground. A lot less than I make at work, but as coin-nut said, it is tax free... Since I pay cash for my in-person purchases, Cents always come in handy for me. Yes, I've found a few wheats on the ground over the years. I've also picked up many Nickels, Dimes and Quarters off the ground.

I'm a little superstitious and only pick up pennies if they are face up. When my wife & I are walking, if we see one that's face down, my wife will reach down, turn it face up, and leave it on the ground. Then I pick it up. That rule only applies to pennies. Anything larger, I don't worry about the face down, I just pick them up.

I looked through a box of pennies last weekend and didn't get anything special or any 2010's. Then on the sidewalk later that day picked up a penny and it was my first 2010D

I worked a side job (security) for a rock fest concert. Afterwards I just walked around and started picking up change, started putting them in my coffee cup, then off came the hat and low and behold I ended up with 44.00. Out of the 44 bucks, I found 8 pennies for my collection and 2 silver quarters...The rest I put in my jeep for car washing...haha...Not bad for a lil walk around the arena area...

Today during my morning walk I pickep up a beer can along side the road (litter bugs better hope I never become president, they will be first on my list). For you Seinfeld fans you know this is worth $.10. So, I'm looking at a cool $360/hour! My MBA is finally paying off! - I know, the jobs flow like wine in Michigan, but I haven't found anything close to this hourly rate. Just my ten cents....

My father told me a story about when he was a teenager in the 1960's. He was walking down the street with his father and one of his fathers friends. They saw a penny on the ground. The two older gentlemen started discussing the fact that picking up a penny was not even worth it any more. Remember these are guys who went through the great depression! My father picks up the penny and told them "I am in college, I need the money!" There is a saying that goes something like this. The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. Maybe to you it is just a penny. To me it is a tiny fraction to apply toward my goal of being retired. Besides what if that penny is rare and valuable? Let the debate continue.... Sincerely, John Leckrone
