I responded to a Cragslist ad recently for unsearched wheats.

The person said there were 2300 wheats all between 1909 and 1939.

I asked how he knew that if they were unsearched.

He didn't reply.

Anything is possible but if they know enough to put them on e-bay they know enough to look for key dates.

Do unsearched lots exist? Probably, but the question is meaningless since there is no way to tell if a lot has been searched or not. If you search it and find nothing worthwhile that doesn't mean anything because the key and semi-key pieces are rare and you wouldn't be likely to find then anyway. Even if you search it and find a semi-key or even a key that doesn't mean the lot was unsearch, it could have been salted.

As some of you know, there have been a lot of goodies found on a certain seller's unsearched slq lots....I've found (3) 1921s and a low grade 1916 so far; so unsearched lots certainly do exist, though 99% of them are likely to have been searched.

My brother is not a collector and has hoarded wheaties ever since we were kids (over 30 years). Friends and family who know nothing about coins used to save the wheats that they found in circulation for him. He probably has over 100 pounds stashed in various containers around his house. One day, when I have some free time, I want to sit down with him and dig through them.

oh they exist just don't expect one from ebay. A week ago a Guy walked into my shop with 3700 wheats. I paid 3xs face like I always do and didn't think anything about it... 2 09ss. 17 09 vdbs. 2 22ds. The list goes on. The find was so good I actually called the Guy back and paid him more because I felt guilty! After 3 years of hunting I found a real unsearched lot.

I like how some of the ads are carefully worded "unsearched by me".

I've had pretty good luck with wheats in Canada. People have less knowledge of the series and seem to care a lot less here. They even show up in decent numbers in rolls.

In a 500-count lot I recently bought at 8 cents (Canadian) each, it was loaded: 1909vdb x 3, 1909 x 4, 11S, 13D, 23S, 26S x 2, 31D x 2, 32D x 2, 33, 33D x 2, and even a 36 DDO!

But I've bought 1000 from the same source and had much less luck.

I suspect the trick is to buy from the west, and from non-collectors.

Well, sounds honest. If you buy a bulk lot and don't search them you can't ver well say that you know for sure they HAVE been searched. You have no idea what has happened to them until they come into your possession so you can only cover from that point forward.

What kills me is the "unsearched" penny roll that just happens to have
a 1916 Dime on the end (who but dimes in a penny roll?). "Maybe a 1916d" Yeah Right! Or a vdb reverse shows on the
end. I bet a lot of those are svdb"s. The list goes on.
Funny thing is people buy them for the dream. What a scam.

AS for that topic I always point out one small fact. If no one searched those coins, how would they know what they are? If I said I have X amount of rolls of UNSEARCHED Wheat Cents, how would I know what is in those rolls? Same with a bag of UNSEARCHED Wheat Cents. If I didn't search them, how would I know what they are?

From private individuals in person and from some coin shops, it's possible.
From ebay, ioffer, etc? Not a chance.

The one key thing to keep in mind is that people search large lots for different reasons. Whil most people are searching for dates (particularly semi-keys and keys), others search for varieties or upgrades as to condition. I can tell you that bulk lots are typically not searched too well for varieties and I've upgraded many of my coins using bulk lots. I've found many Buffalo nickel varieties in bulk lots, for example. I've found 1894 DDO Indian Head cents in bulk lots, etc.

And I also agree, nearly all of the bulk lots are searched for dates and those rare lots that have semi-key dates in them could be "salted", to get you to come back for more.
