Quote: Anybody know what they do with returned sets? That's an interesting question. It would be easy to replace a bad coin in a proof set and resell. The mint set is another story.

Question. Who believes that as long as the obverse and reverse look okay with 20/20, you will keep them? Do any of you demand better? Perhaps a 10x loupe?
Okay, so I received 4 sets today. Tomorrow I'm sending the 4 sets back for exchange. I realize with 28 coins, they are not all going to look perfect BUT with 2-3 coins in each set having issues..nope. Hoping that when they get sets back for exchange, the person filling the box might look at the sets a little closer. Issues mostly were with the presidential coins, especially the scratches and gouges on lady libertys arm. The coins with outright gouges were the backs of the quarters. Lastly and most important as a Lincoln collector were the nicks and gouges on the shields. Most issues were on the Philadelphia coins.
Hope to report better results later.
Here is a question. How many of you believe

John: Not sure you are going to find many mint sets where every coin looks good especially with a 10x loupe. In addition I believe the mints sets are already packed in sealed boxes so the person who is shipping them to you can't see the coins.
How much is the shipping back to the mint on 4 sets?

Someone else does alway seem to get high grade coins to assemble sets with. It is appalling that the mint cannot include at least five or six gradable coins. But just think if they just up and quit producing mint sets, making the quarters, halves, and others available only in change. After them doing that just one year we'd be nonplussed. I think I'll go open a second set. Maybe find a high grade.

S&H was $5 to get them to me. Not sure if return shipping will be the same.
Edit: Ended up costing $12. We'll see how it goes next time.

Yeah I figured 4 sets would be several pounds. I knew it was going to cost more than $4.95. Especially with DC and if you included insurance.

I just looked at mine with a 5x Mag and the Dollars had minor issues that I could have lived with but the majority of the quarters had DEEP gouges on the reverse. I have gotten better looking coins from the bank. Of course, they were not Satin finish.

I ended up keeping one and sending back 3. At first I thought they might actually treat exchanges differently. Perhaps taking a better look before putting them in that cardboard box. Who knows though. Maybe they just throw another 3 sealed packages back in a box and call it good.

Well it is worth opening a second set if you bought one. When we opened our second set, there were a whole two sleeves of great, possibly submittable coins. Only the Lincoln Golden Dollar had gouges visible without a magnifier. So there are indeed great Mint Sets in this mailing for us to scour through, just gotta open more than one set, it appears. Keep looking.

My uncirculated set came and it looks great!! I didn't see a problem really with any of the coins... no visible scratches, gouges, luster problems...nothing. Looked at under magnification and still much the same... I think my set is definitely a set to consider submitting.

legend, you mentioned submittable coins. I'm pretty much a newb but do you submit coins from a mint set for slabbing? Just curious.

In the last 2 years the Mint/Proof sets are received by me in an unacceptable condition, I called the mint, I have been ordering for many, many years, and I explained the poor quality and scratches etc, I received a return label, sent the coins back to the center that distributes them and received the shipping cost for the return shipping, in a check 5-10 days later and also asked for replacement sets and the replacements were in excellent condition.
I believe, IMO, They send the coins for an inspection of the set, and according to those findings, either resend the set out to another customer, or have some pile for some dealer they probably sell to for a discount, just my opinion on what they do with the returned sets, but if you are NOT satisfied with the sets you receive, call the Mint and return them, you pay enough to be satisfied......

I just received my replacement sets today and the quality is a LOT better then the last sets. I have to say that the process for returning sets and getting replacements was excellent. The Mints quality control may be lacking but at least the customer service is still good.

My original proof set was poor quality and I also sent it back. First time I've ever had to do that.
Fortunately, like you, the replacement set was much better.
