Cards make money for others.

Yes they do. I've been able to buy some nice coins with the cash back rewards they make.

The secret; Pay off the balance when it come due.

I don't use cash, but my wife does. I raid her wallet every week for the old carboy. Actually I drive her nuts because I inspect change from drive-thru's when they hand it back.

Its good to hear some of your replies. I'm sure all of you experienced collectors out there went through that obsessed period where you couldn't get away from coins! Some of my friends think I'm crazy!...and I am just a little! Ha

What do you mean "obsessed period"? I've been doing this off and on for over 50 years and I still can't wait to see if there is anything in my change. Coin collecting is either in your blood or it isn't. Glad to hear that I am not the only one who uses cash in order to get change back.

Likewise I try to use cash, just got my first circulating shield cents a few weeks ago this way, then I asked the girl if I could buy the rest she had, she reluctatly gave me two more but that made three.

Would any of you think less of me if I admitted to:

Visiting my local casino...

Putting $1 into a "penny-machine"...

Placing a bet of $.01...

Cashing out, and then taking the ticket to the change machine to get my $.99 in coins?

Found a 1943 steel cent that way awhile back.

I use cash whenever possible.

I agree with andrew! I always give strange amounts so I get more pennies back! The lady at the gas station where I go everyday always gives me 2009 or 2010 pennies or wheat pennies in my change!

I like it when a purchase rings up to something odd like $4.03. But the cashier will always grab 3 cents from the "give a penny - take a penny" and I always think Nooooo! :)

CRH I know what you mean. I was buying lunch the other day and the total was 4.03. Got to the window and handed the lady a five... got a single as change... *sigh*

LOL..

"ummm my change should be $.97, may I have that please?"
"Why? here's a dollar..."
"Well I uh... It's just that I... ... *Sigh* A dollar is fine, thank you."

It's cool buying stamps out of the machine at the post office with a 20 dollar bill because they always stock the machines with interesting coinage...I wonder if it accepts 50 dollar bills?

Adam E: "if the purchase price is 5.43 I give 5.52 just to get a nickel and 4 pennies"
So by giving 2 pennies you'll be getting 2 plus the same 2 back? That's really going to get you odd looks from a sane cashier.

Ok all, what do you do if you see a Wheat Back in the "give a penny take a penny jar"? I always feel weird taking one out - even I put a few in too.

I have gotten some nice modern coins by paying for my purchases with cash. These are coins one does not see many of. I waited 3 months before I found my first commemorative 2009 cent and 4 months to find my first national parks quarter. I hate not being able to get many of these coins in rolls from my bank... Sincerely, John Leckrone
