Well, I'll tell you. About a 3weeks ago I saw this on ebay as bu for $199 Buy it now. I believe it was a 10 day listing.I kept it on my watch list. Nobody went for it. It was immediately relisted for $99 as a three day listing and now was NOT a buy it now, so I got it for $99 with free shipping.
I personally did not think it was bu, because I am still not confident with my grading skills on top of the fact that this year and mint there are so many inconsistencies. I was hoping mid to high au when I purcahsed it. When I got the coin, I liked it and the toning, but I was hoping for more luster.

I also see some wear on the leaves on the wreath, I'm going to say AU-58.

Man, you guys are good. I blew up all three pics (about 10x) and the only thing that looked like rub, to this obviously untrained eye, was on the eagles right wing tip. I'm assuming it was advertized as an AU. Actually really doesn't matter, high retail even at AU50 is $200. You done good!

I'd say AU58, but the coin looks too shiny. That could be the lighting from the picture taking, but these pics don't show what I would call "original surfaces". Looks like it has been cleaned. Might change my mind with different pics. A great coin and not a bad date.

That was my concern. I am on the fence with this coin, I have taken differnet shots and they all look different surfaces, The coin does have a little cartwheeling. I am not always convinced that cartwheeling may be a sign that the coin has not been cleaned.. But I am keeping it because I like it.....send it in to a TPG any thoughts?

pictures are always deceiving, even yours. the last few are closer to what the coin in hand COULD be like,,, Still its a strong AU for sure...
I refrain from giving guesses to grade when the pictures are so unclear......(its like bidding on some ebay coins LOL") And with ebay...Sometimes there are grate buys. due to poor photo's from good people.. I frown when a good company has POOR PHOTO'S Let us know what you have found!!

That's a tough one. I'm going to say AU-53. I'll be interested to see what NGC has to say.

Well.... I just checked NGC's website......they say it was IMPROPERLY CLEANED. Oh well, I like the coin any way and I had a voucher for the grading so it did not cost me anything. I somewhat suspected it , so there it is.

Flat spots tend to be more shiny than the overall luster, while wear tends to be duller. But polishing can remove wear as well as details. And the 1st 2 pics definitely looked polished.

Hard to believe all those pics are the same piece. What a difference lighting makes!

It is au details. I felt it may have been cleaned but not polished. There were hairlines but they did not seem to be parallel but more erratic. It did not have that sheen of a polished coin. The coin did cartwheel a bit. That is what confused me a bit.
My first gut impression was that it was cleaned and I don' know if I was trying to convince myself it wasn't.

Dom, I was beat to the punch, always, a day late, lol..If you look under the Obverse lettering at between 10 and 2 o'clock you will notice a different looking "shine or lack of' meaning below the word Pluribus, there is a distinct looking difference in the details, this coin was cleaned and if you look in the right places, you will find it, your skills will only get better with time and more practice, good luck, ....
