Hi Ralph, I would do yourself a huge favor and get the gold out of the safety deposit box. If the banks close the doors you could be locked out for one heck of a long time and new terrorism laws could put you in a bad spot when you do go in to open the box as the laws may put government officials at your side when you do so. Bring the babies home and find a safe place to store them and believe me when I say those places are unlimited!!! Quite honestly we don't know what lies ahead so use the "Boy Scout" in you and be prepared by accepting and taking total control of that which you don't wish to loose! Shoot, you could always store it right here at my house as I have always offered free coin storage to all my friends and neighbors from all over the country!!!

TERRY - TEE HEE A generous offer indeed - think I'll pass on it though. I've been toying with the idea of bringing it home, but there's a good bit of it, and my major concern there would be security - can't scrap with the big boys like I used to - reckon I could bury it out in the back yard as long as I don't forget where I buried it. :) Truth be told, I've got a safe here at home - recent purchase - that I can store it in - thus the thoughts about bringing it, and my coins, home. I've got scans of everything, but looking at a picture is nowhere as neat as looking at the real thing in your hand.

I will agree with you completely! A bird in hand is much nicer than one in a bush! There are a tremendous amount of ways to hide items, such as coins, in the home today. Numerous areas can be utilized as long as you don't chose an object that is on a burglars list of goodies to take. I guess the biggest concern, in my mind, is not whether or not a burglar will find them but the devastation of a home fire! With that in mind I would make every effort to keep the coins low as fire always burns up!!! Good luck with whatever you choose to do. Enjoying our efforts in the privacy of home makes it so much more worthwhile!

Quickstudy - in addition to Kitco, I've saved a couple other sites to my computer to follow the precious metal market - GOLDPRICE.ORG and CNNMoney.com - good articles on both sites aswell as current price quotes.

Ralph, I would also recommend you remove your gold from the bank.In the case of a national emergency,FEMA takes over and they play by a whole different set of rules. when it comes to Banks and deposit boxes. I would suggest you spend just a little of that gold,go buy yourself a good heavy (600#+) gunsafe. Most are also rated to 1250 degrees or over also and you can bolt them to you floor. I know I sleep better at night for it.

FEMA? Aren't they the ones that dropped the ball when Katrina hit New Orleans? I live in a trailer - don't know if the floor would support a 600 pound safe - might wake up some morning with it UNDER the trailer. I do have a small gun safe - large enough to hold my coins and gold. Don't know how it will stand up in a fire, but I'll feel better having my stuff at home. I can always sleep with a pistol by the bed to keep the boogeyman away, but few people in my little town are even aware that I collect coins let alone own some gold, so I won't be worrying too much about it - our crime rate here consists of seat belt violations and speeding tickets, and most folks don't even lock their doors when they leave home. Same thing with their cars - go to the local grocery store parking lot, walk among the cars, and you'll see the keys in the ignition in 90 percent of the vehicles. Not too bad of a little town I live in - dull as all get out, but safe.

Thanks guys for the suggestions, and info - my stuff will be coming home. TLS5933, about the trailer with the safe in it - did your friend have to reinforce the floor in some way? And, yes, I consider myself fortunate to live where I do - the town is a treasure - not to mention the fact that there are several old building on the town square, and elsewhere in the city limits that were constructed back in the 19th century. Nice place to live.

Ralph, Nope,he didn't have to reinforce the floor. Yep,our town use to be like that also, ufortunatly, what I consider a change in America's values and increases in population and drugs has changed all of that. Our city fathers see it as growth,I see it as an end to what once was.

Thank you for the input about safes! I'm in the market for one myself. It will be bolted down and fire "safe" to some degree (no pun intended).
As for "growth"...I agree with you TLS5933. There is no place more evident than in the Phoenix Valley. You can drive South for 30-40 miles and there's nothing but torn up land where the desert once was. Literally, just dirt and earthmovers for miles. There is a major freeway being built here and every intersection has new shopping malls and so forth. Investors arrived last year and the housing market boomed. Now the investors are pulling out and many of the areas are dropping. I remember this Valley as beautiful desert, clear skies and not so hot. The heat alone will make it unbearable some day. There is nothing but, concrete and walls everywhere. Our open country can never be replaced or returned to it's natural state. They call this progress? With an increase in housing, population, etc. the drugs and crime rates increase also. What once were small cities, safe from intrusions are now locked down. We even have to lock our cars in our own garages! Law Enforcement does absolutely nothing for small crimes either. It's the way to keep the "numbers" down to give a better picture of the area to procure even more growth.
Ralph...you are VERY fortunate to live in a safe community! I remember the days!
Sorry that I got on my high horse! Whew!
In an effort to turn this thread back into a coin thread - any other suggestions (i.e., web sites, dealers) for the purchase of a safe?

Actually, some sporting goods stores have gun safes for sale. I think that I saw an ad for a 20-gun safe in the newspaper today. It was going at around $300.

It looks to me like silver has broken down technically, as it has closed below its upward trend.
Does anyone have a link to a sober market analysis and commentary about silver?
I have had it with reading cheerleaders for the collapse of Western Civilization (e.g., jsmineset.com).
TIA

Yes, but who besides you would think of covering a pile of gold coins with an old Buffalo hide? I'll bet there is even silver in them thare Buffalo chips you got laying around your office.

LOL, this is exactly how I feel too, someone is underestimating the industriousness of the American Middle class. Hard times have come before and will come again, but civilization isn't going to fail during my lifetime.
