Great site Cubro99, I just bookmarked it. Why are there no values listed for the hanging varieties? Are they that common, and worth face value?

fwi, castor posted that site link.
To answer your question the hanging (die clash) varietis don't have a price because they are incredibly common and carry little to no premium value. For the 1962 penny a die clash occurs in ~23.5% of the circulation strikes.

Ooops, sorry about that. You are so right, thanks for the link Castor.
Thanks for responding to the question Cubro99, I was thinking that they were pretty common. I have a couple of these that look like they were just minted yesterday. Although the value may not be high, the die clashes make these coins incredibly interesting.

Are you kidding me? I have never, ever found a hanging '62 cent.

I don't understand you can find hangers on one in four '62 cents. I haven't found a single one, in any date for that matter. Is the hanger visible with a 10x loupe on a brown circulated cent?

Well, die clashes occur over every year and denomination, they just change shape. To see it you might need a 10x loupe and it will be easier if you are near-sighted. On the '62 penny it is a thin scratch that goes from the last digit, it takes a left turn and finishes at the leaf. If you can't see it change the angle or get a stronger light. You can have a better chance on 1952, look for a scratch following the stem and attached to the bud. Or go buy $5 in pennies pull out all your 1979's and check those and you will find one.

I admit that I am still reasonably new at trying to figure out exactly what I do have in my collection, and know very little about die clash coins. What I can tell you is where I got my hangers. I rescued them form the "junk box" at the coin shop in 2004. Five pennies for $1. Interestingly, I am near sighted , and noticed the irregularity on the shiny 62 and 63 almost immediately. Hope that helps...

Cubro: I understand what the hangers are. My post (and the one before it) was expressing amazement and disbelief that you find these in 25% of the cents from that particular year.

I then asked if the hangers are visible on a circulated brown coin

Answer: yes
There can be several reasons why you were unable to find I'm just trying to help you out.
I got the one in four number because I have 302 cents from '62 and 71 were 'hangers' and these all came from circulation. From red to brown, from MS-65 to VG, and most over the past 5 years.

Splatto, I just checked my brown ones. I was unable to spot it, or perhaps I just do not have any? I would expect it would difficult to see it on a brown.

Thanks Cubro. I just reread my message and realize it sounds a little snarky, that wasn't my intent. My apologies if you took it as such.

I just found my first hanger about an hour ago - a 1963 single hanging 3, circulated brown. It was pretty hard to spot but it's easy to see if you know what to look for. I still find it amazing that such a high percentage of 62's have that die clash - I haven't found a single one in many many cent boxes.

Splatto - I had about $3.50 in Canadian cents that I saved from roll searching US cents. (I'm trying to put together an entire set of George VI and Elizabeth from circulation - missing a '37, '39, '49 and '54, then 2008-2011.) Anyway, I had a handful of '62s and '63s. I found two hanging 2s and four hanging 3s. I can't vouch for their rarity, but after finding the first 1962 I was hoping they were very rare. Then I found the next one and figured they must not be that big of a deal.
