Looks like someone was trying to emulate a broadstrike

Well, it's too bad it didn't turn out to be anything. Thanks for your help.

Greenflannel, don't give up on this one yet. If you can, post a picture of the reverse. I just don't understand how the obverse is damaged and nothing showing on the reverse. Perhaps some kind of capped die strike?

This coin has definitely been damaged post-mint. I couldn't tell you how because there are literally millions of ways to damage a coin but I am certain this was not done at the mint.

The biggest give away is that the rim is missing. Could have been pressed with a socket in the garage and they sanded/polished to wear away the upper layer.

Morgan, per your request here is a picture of the reverse of the quarter. As you can see, it has no apparent damage.

That is definitely NOT counting machine damage. Counting machines leave a few scratches behind, maybe a thin groove...but they don't completely eat through half the thickness of the coin and completely remove the details of the coin.

My best guess here is damage, but I am uncertain what caused it. Final word on this would be with Mike Diamond...I'm more of a variety person than an error person. Mike knows the errors far better.

That is interesting? I was expecting some damage on the reverse.

when I first saw the picture the first thing that came to mind was a capped die. I am no error collector either so I am probably wrong since some of the others that have commented collect and study errors allot more than I do.

I assure you that this is real. As I stated in the original post, I've had the quarter for twelve years and that's how it's always looked. The general consensus here is that it's just post-mint damage; likely intentional. It's too bad, but if it turns out to be nothing at least it was a fun little mystery for the past decade.

Someone took a grinder or polishing wheel to the obverse face.
