Hello everyone, I'm back. The two weeks was great. Looking forward to catching up. My aunt gifted me a medal awarded to my grandfather by the Queen in 1953 when sri lanka was a british colony. Unfortunately she cleaned it so it would look nice. I'll post pictures as soon as I can.

Welcome back Shatsi, glad you had a safe trip. That's neat about the medal. 1953 was the first year of Queen Elizabeth's reign I think. Wonder if that award presentation was her first official duty?

I didn't know that. I'm going to find out its history. I don't know anything about medals.

Shatsi,I would consider having the medal conserved by a professional organization. I'm sure you know who they are. I don't hold with cleaning coins, but this is a very unique medal that has to do with your family history and it justly deserves restoration, if required. You also might try a well established museum for assistance, and I would even go so far as to contact the Sri Lanka Embassy for assistance, I'll bet that they would gladly assist. Whatever you do, best of luck with a medal to be proud of and congratulations to you and your family.

Here's a picture of the medal. No one seem to remember the reason it was awarded.

Hey, Did you go to the same shop I went to when I went for vacation to Sri Lanka/ Maldives?

We were on our way to a place called Kandy and I saw this Antique shop, Picked up alot and alot of coins, very cheap and genuine and picked up most of what you picked up and my Mom picked up some antique masks for her mask collection.

The coin you have is similar to my coin, the ancient one, well its same design and shape, When I was there I also picked up some VOC coinage from Dutch Ceylon, one I bought for 300 Sri Lankan ruppees is now worth $500!!

And regarding the ancient coin:

Date: 1197-1200
Metal: Copper
Ruler: Queen Lilavati
Price: After Lots of heavy research and mailing to other people, I found out mines genuine and in that quality its worth around $200.

Yes, its from Kandy. Its a shop across the entrance to the palace. I paid about US $9 for the three. They did have some VOC coins but not much details and most of the ancients had the green stuff on it. Wish I knew more about sri lankan coinage then I'll havea better idea. Thank you for the info. How can I find out whether the ancient is genuine?
