That 1943 looks like a relative of the ones BadThad has been selling. What causes the other side to be weak?

The missing area on the opposite die (where the Cud is) doesn't put pressure/resistance on the opposite side of the coin, thus not forming that area of the opposite area of the die. Kind of like pushing you fingers together. Move one finger inward and press with the remaining ones. No resistance in that area. Thus the side opposite the Cud can be weak if the Cud is large enough.

Haven't been keeping THEM?

I have found ONE in over 1.5 million coins searched over 30 years. With that, I highly doubt the "them" you haven't been keeping are actually Cuds.

If there is a collection of metal that is all "in the field" is it still called a Cud?

Nope, that would just be common die chips and definitely not the same as a Cud. A Cud is a specific type of die break that affects the shank and face of a die, it will always start and end at the rim.

Congrats on your first MorgansRmine!

I didn't think they were THAT rare...I've found at least 10 of various sizes in the last few years.

So this is interesting to me, and I sure have learned something from this thread. Here's a dumb question... what does Cud stand for? I understand what it is now from the pictures (and even how they're created!), but what's the acronym for?

not an acronym, just a funny sounding name
