Thanks for the comments all. I found both the 53 far and near mules in grampa's collection. they weren't know when he died. I went through his nickels and pulled them out. Ill keep my eyes on the ebay auction Rodime ,thanks. I will eventually get my mules slabbed ,but for now I will just ride and enjoy them...

The one you posted a week ago is the shoulder fold version (easily distinguished by the straight I's on the obverse). The one in this thread is the no shoulder fold (the I's are flarred).
Yours is the common version, the one above is the rare version (some people call it a mule - I don't know if it is a mule or not).

Interesting. It seems clear that when they moved from NSF to SF, they also did the reverse change of FL to NL. A pairing of an old reverse with a new obverse was inevitable. Perhaps the reverse change occurred later, and the first runs were the old reverse with the new reverse. If that was the case, you'd be right, it wouldn't be technically a mule, but a scarce variety. But, why the pairing of the old obverse that was being retired with a new reverse? Is there any die pairing info for these "mules"?

There are six NSF NL on ebay right now, including an MS-63 for $3000. That would seem to be a MASSIVE number for even a "very scarce" coin. How scarce can it be if there are six on ebay?

On the other hand, out of the 3 (Previously. Now 4?) 2005P non-magnetic pennies, 2 of them were listed on ebay....

And there are offerings of many scarce stuff occasionally. If there were six 1969 10c LD on ebay, right now, what would be the conclusion about scarcity?

I don't think these 1953 nickels are as scarce as they are portrayed to be. I believe there are many more sitting in drawers and jars that are simply unattributed. I found 4 of these "mules" in 1 lot of nickels just a few months ago, 2 of each type. More will definitely show up as will 2005P non mag pennies now that more people are aware of their existence......the hunt is on.

is the 2005P non mag only from UNC sets? Or have they been found in the wild as well?

The 53s have been known for some time.
They are in a 2003 Charlton I just checked.

The question is, have the new young collectors been lost to the never-can-like-toning side of collecting.
Supply and demand, with demand being lost to flash.

I think you may be right dialog_gvf, I think young collectors are more attracted to "ooo shiny" rather than a beautifully toned coins. I might add that they may even be attracted to cleaned coins. A thread for a different topic.
Nice coin gord, I would say VF-20.
