I hope your has a P under the Queen! I look for any and all 2000 coins and look for that P. If I ever find one I'll laugh all the way to the bank and move out of my unsuitable apartment as soon as I auction it off! It's exciting to find the 2000 coins and look for that illusive P!!

My fingers are crossed for you

P means it's plated zinc or steel. Some 2000 P coins were test coins given to businesses to test vending machines only, not meant or circulation and spending, but some of them "got out" in circulation, is how I understand the story. Other years have P coins too, and they're regular circulation coins, but the 2000's were not meant to circulate.

A 2000 coin with a "P" on it, below the Queen's neck, could be big bucks. Others in here know more than I do about this.

Unless it's a 200P 5 cent coin. Then it's small bucks, but still more than 5 cents :)

In 1999, they made a few thousand P-sets for sale.

But in 2000, it seems you had to get your P-coins (non-nickel) by having very lucky connections. I'd love to know who owns these coins... maybe vending head honchos or RCM employees' family! (Yeah, that's fair.)

I'd also love to see a picture of a 2000-P commemorative quarter. There doesn't seem to be room for a "P" on that quarter, since there's already some text under the queen's effigy. This is very curious!

Let's wait to see if any pictures of this show up here. Sadly, I kind of doubt they will.

The 2000P coins have the same obverse design as the 2001 coloured Canada Day coin. Having never seen a 2000P in-hand I'm not totally sure if the same die was used though.

Thanks, Scissel! I had no idea of that design, as I don't collect those coloured commemoratives. (Aren't forums great?!)

It's really neat to see the "P" fitting above the legend like that.

hhbkiddo: Cool... have you seen a real 2000P? I don't even know anyone who has seen one! I'm very intrigued by these modern rarities.

My understanding is that some P's coins were minted in Canada, and some sent out to the US, who used a different sized P mark. You'll see big "P" and small "p" to differentiate who minted them. I can't remember who did which though. Maybe someone else in here knows for sure?

I also don't know which coins or years the US might have minted any Canadian P coins either. Most of our coins have the small p on them so that makes me think the US used the big P but someone else who knows will have to verify which is correct for which country..

Dottir: Do you know for which years there are 2 different-sized "P"s? Are you talking about year 2000 only?

As far as I know, since 1968 Canada has produced all of it's own coins. I see no reference to US production or US planchets in Charlton. Canada has imported US raw materials like rolled zinc but I believe we produce all our own planchets. Oh, there were "German" toonie planchets in 1996, but there is no distinguishing mark on those coins. That could be the only exception.

The big "P" changed to a little "p" in 2003 when the Queen's crown came off. This had nothing to do with USA production.

I'm glad you posted this "P's" info here too Malibu. I'll try google up that info I found again to enquire of the poster or site owner where and how the person got that info about US/Canada and big and small P/p. Don't want to post wrong info and I'm sorry if I did :(
