Ok, This has been bugging me, so I pulled the coin out of the plastic case and took some more pictures. The plastic case has some scuffing on the surface and I thought that some of the scratches may have been in the plastic case. I took some more pics, see if you can notice a difference. Compare these pics with the ones in the first post. As you can see, quite a few scratches and the die break that scoutjim thought he saw are not there, the flaws were in the plastic. See here:

I think that there was some cleaning, possibly not by you but maybe by somebody else. It's a really nice coin, I'd grade it an Au-50ish.

I appreciate all the feedback. We'll see what the graders have to say, but I know for a fact that the coin has not been cleaned. I pulled it up from the same depth and area that I was finding V-nickels and Indian cents at. They were in good shape too, that park was a great place for finding old coins in great condition.

With all due respect, have you been watching it since 1915? I believe that you haven't brushed it, but the parallel cleaning marks are just as obvious on the obverse in each picture, and they didn't change. If anything, it's more obvious outside the case than inside. Look at 9:00 and 3:00 in the fields, running from northwest to southeast.

Nothing else makes marks like that on a coin.

I guess it's possible that someone polished it up before losing it back then. Maybe a kid got bored at school and was fooling with it and then lost it in the park on a sunny afternoon in 1915. Who knows? All I can account for is that I found it deep in the ground and that I didn't clean it. We'll never know. I enjoy the coin anyways and know that I'll probably never find another Barber in this condition. I still plan on sending it in just to see what the graders think, I won't be upset if they reject it for cleaning or surface irregularities. Like I said before, I appreciate the opinions even though they may not be what I want to hear. I respect honest opinions from anyone.

Well, for my part, if I'm wrong it wouldn't even be the first time today.

Either way, as I said, I'd be proud to have it. They rarely come out of the ground that nice.

What lens are you using to take the pictures?
Nice cam, I've got the same model, but I went to buy a "cheaper" camera with the macro function to take pictures of coins.
As far as the coin grade, it does appear something is funky with the coin, I would say the details are au50+, but I would definitely say at some point in time, the coin has been cleaned. I am sure you did not clean it, but someone, somewhere, some time ago did clean it.

I'm using the standard 18-35mm zoom that came with the camera.

The coin does look better the possible die break is gone and some of the scratches appear to be gone as well, but I still see some scuff marks. Still I would be proud to own it . I believe you didn't do it. And Once again Nice photos

I just have to say...Nice find! As for the grade, I can't say because I really don't know enough about grading to give you a good opinion there.

Thanks guys. A great camera makes a bad photographer good. This thing is ridiculously easy to use. It was a unboxed item at Best Buy and I got a heck of a buy on it. My first good camera was a Pentax ME Super and that was a great film camera, but the digital is much easier to use and no film costs or chemical overexposures anymore. I still have the Pentax, but it's a collectors item now. I use the digital alot at races and car shows, here's a link to my website for my Nostalgia Super Stock racer, some of the pics are OK, you can see the advantages of digital photography, nothing to it at my level (amateur): http://www.63savoy.com , I found this car in Canada, it was a gutted shell when I got it, been working on it and racing it for years now. We're in central FL now, I need to get a water MD and do some treasure hunting here, the 1715 Plate Fleet went aground a few miles north of us.

jdheyne do you have the PhotoStudio 5.5 software that comes with the camera? If not, you need to get it, makes close ups and editing a snap. The standard 18-35mm that comes with the camera can get as close as you could possibly want. They also make a macro attachment for the cam that really gets in there. No need for you to invest in another camera, that's why I chose this one.

Hi! Great find and great coin. I agree with the opinions on the coin being cleaned. Being buried may have caused some of the scratching, but the patterns are very regular. Please post the results when you get it back from the TPG. Mike

It's a beautiful coin with very nice toning. I'd call it EF45-AU50. The difference would be seeing it in-hand. I do think the obverse was cleaned long ago, but still a very attractive coin.

Nope, I bought my camera without the standard lens that came with the camera to save a couple bucks to buy a little longer lens, I did not plan on doing any macro-type photography.
And no to the PhotoStudio as well, but I am using Photoshop 8... which should do the job just fine...
