it looks like someone dipped the edges into a gold color solution. I have found a total of three Gold Platted ikes. It has some heavy marks on it but it is a lot better than what other ikes I've seen. no mint is Philly. D is Denver. S is San Fransisco.

Again Gentlemen......Many Thanks! So for my last question on this matter...... What do I do with it? Lets say you don't really collect Ike dollars but came across this nice BU 1972, What would YOU do? Have it sent off to be graded and cased, seal it in some protective cover, or just put it back in the coin jar?

I would spend it.....but then again I dont collect Ikes...i think that is probably the ugliest coin the mint has ever made. well that and the Susan B Anthony dollar is even uglier. just my opinion of course.

that may BU but it has scratches on it. I would just spend it or just throw it in a box for your kids or something. I keep a bunch of these and I am in college and when I go out to eat I tip with either 2 dollar bills or Ike dollars. The waitresses usually appreciate the ikes cause most of the time they grew up with them and dont see them alot.

Lincolncentguy, Why are these the ugliest? Is it because they both have the same reverse..... or that Susan and Ike look so much alike?
Coincollector123, Good Idea!! I never thought of using dollars and halves for tips!

I can't tell from your pictures, is it a type 1 or a type 3? I have the feeling that this coin wouldn't grade. It looks like the reverse has been cleaned (lots of hairlines) and perhaps the obverse too.

odentheviking,
It is a 1972 Philadelphia Type 1 Ike. Before relegating the coin to a junk pile or putting it back into circulation. It might be a good idea to check it for Doubling or a number of other varieties that come on the 72 Type one. Such as the various die clashes TALON HEAD HAIR LIP JAW LINE MOON LINE UPSIDE DOWN U THE VOLUNTEER EYE CLASHED IKE As far as 72 Type 1's go yours does not look like she is in too bad of shape from the photos. I have seen MUCH worse

Sorry Terry, You are talking way over my head here! I do not collect Ikes so I do not know how to look for these things. As this is a coin I picked up 25+ years ago, I will mostlikely hold on to it, maybe now I will put it in a protective case, but that is about all. I would not mind trading this coin for something I do collect, but I need another 20+ posts to be able to do that. Thanks for all the help forum. Paul.

odentheviking, I am sorry, I forgot to put a link to the Ike Group web site where there are pictures and descriptions of all of the varieties that I mentioned. It is a site where there are some great guys that have a tremendous love of the Eisenhower dollar series. http://www.ikegroup.org/Terry

Hey Stewart, what do you mean by moonline on the 72 one dollar? I found one that does have a line in the field on the reverse resembling the moon below the egal. Also it has only 1 color on the rim instead of the regular copper and clad.

They are pretty common in my book, but they are close to me. I doubt this one is/was though. Quote: .8 oz's just like my other modern dollars, my older solid silver ones come in at 1oz. on this scale. This scale tends to round up. Grams would be more precise. A silver Ike should be around 24.59g, a clad one is around 22.67g. I doubt this one is silver. It could be toning, but I have yet to see a BU Ike with a gold rim. I have seen quite a few that the rims have been colored silver/white/gold in (what I assume) is an attempt to pass them off as silver. The area of the moon where the circle is flat instead of completely round is different on all three types. It's easier to look at the islands in my opinion.

odentheviking, be sure to hold coins by their edges. If you don't, there's good odds that in the future you'll find an image of your fingerprint on them. Of course this applies mostly to uncirculated and proof coins, but it's good to be in the habit regardless of what coin you're holding.
