I'm from the camp that they should be destroyed so they nobody can ever get ripped off with one.

BadThad ~ I've wrestled with that idea numerous times but just can't bring myself to destroy a coin. I have a small can full of demolished coins that I have picked up off the streets. My "Road Kill" collection. Some are so bad they are hardly recognizable but I still can't bring myself to throw them away. Maybe I ought to post that collection!?

Go ahead and post them! I have a difficult time throwing coins away myself. It would be interesting to see what sort of tragedies you have rescued.

14ers: I know what you mean. I ask myself (too often) "What am I doing!?" but then I go right on doing it anyways.

Stuff in my collection that I don't like looking at I get rid of. I got a nephew that loves dateless Buffalo's, bent corroded IHC's, and whatever. Don't worry I give him nice stuff also! |

Notice how on the tiny white specks are scattered around so that they are considered "normal" with the rest of the pic. But then look at the white speck that's right beside the fake "1". Pretty clever photography - it's almost subliminal.

wow. being a newbie it looks real to me. I never really knew how popular faking coins were until I joined CC and several metal detecting forums.

Another way to tell these fakes is the difference in the size of the 1's in the date.
with the real 1914 both 1's are the same size.

If you look close, you can see the handy work of the counterfeiter. This is what hurts our hobby :-(

nice story,how to they alter the 44d out of curosity
One thing that bugs me though is even though there are some honest people out there that changed 44d to 14d but represented as such altercations still play a big part of the problem. Obv there will be a few buyers trying to pass it off as a legit 14d in the future and trick a new comer
just a few thoughts
