Just my opinion, but I think you find far more interesting stuff searching cents than any other denomination.
Tons of good stuff is still out there no matter which one you choose though.

I would search rolls of coins that are of a series that interest me. I would make a set, and improve the set along the way. I would learn what varieties and better dates were in the series. I chose Jefferson nickels because there is quite a lot of satisfaction in all those areas to be had. The actual series has ended in the design that started in 1938 and ended in 2003 but they all the dates and mint marks are out there to be had at face value.

nickels are the easiest to find interesting things in, always a good assortment of older coins, silver, and foriegn coins along with the odd proof or buffalo/v-nick. Anything can pop up in a box of nickels. In the 5 years I've been searching nickel boxes I've found a 1950 proof and a 1883 with cents, but still am missing 5 jeffersons lol.

if your asking about which to search in regards to the best return based on time, searching and quantity; they are all by chance.
in a lot of our experience, you could get lucky with a solid roll of halves or dimes from the teller, or you could get skunked on 10 boxes. most people around here will tell you that if you can find halves that are customer wrapped rolls, those tend to yield more than a bank ordered box. with dimes, it seems that boxes and rolls get you about 1-5 per$250. I suggest buying a few boxes /week or whatever you can afford and see what works. there is an awful lot of beginners luck on this site, let me tell you...

I am in the opposite camp, I have found more silver halves from bank boxes than customer rolls. But regardless the key to any roll search is volume. Only through regularlly going through massive amounts of coins will you find the rare and valuable ones. Patience is truely the key to roll searching.

Halves are your best bet for silver....they just don't circulate like quarters, dimes and nickels. Good luck.

Large coins are more subject to damage, even to bag marks from the minting process.
So I would suggest looking at halves. Does not matter if they are clad 40% 90% or whatever. If you are taking coins from circulation, the rarest ones are those in pristine condition. And getting a half from a mint roll without ANY bag marks is truly a rare coin. MS65's don't normally occur in circulation.
I pull Australian 20c and 50c coins from circulation, and I only manage to get one or two perfect coins each year. It far easier to cop out and buy an uncirculated mint pack that has select coins in it. These are available from Post Offices in Australia.
Does the U.S. Mint use the Post office as a selling agent?

Canada Post does what Sel is implying, only in Canada. Mainly it's collectors' sets and colourized coins.

I've found that the coins that interest me most get the biggest returns....simply because I enjoy looking at pennies, I find good stuff. I have huge amounts of silver but never search for anything other than key dates..the interest is just not there. And if you're gonna do it on a regular basis, you better enjoy it.

Two words: dimes! IMO, best of all worlds. Silver, variety, and consistency. Been searching dimes for 3 years....hundreds of silvers found, proofs, Barbers, old silver Canadians, mercs, errors, etc...half dollars would be next in line, due to the bulk silver content, and possible variety, then errors.
