For me, Condor hit the nail on the head. They're offering far too many products. Collectors used to be satisfied with just a proof set, or maybe an uncirc set and a proof set. Now they've got satin finish, uncirc, circulating, bags, rolls, proof, silver proof. I keep expecting colorized coins to come out next.

i have quit buying proof sets b.c they cost so much. then a year down the road if you need to sell they are worth 10 bucks. other than that they just dont offer anything some people want anymore IMO

Too many choices, that's another thing. Imagine how much they spend on dies for a coin they produce for a single year.

A sense of déjà vu. Two weeks ago, our forum admins had to create a dedicated Canadian NCLT (Non-Circulating Legal Tender) forum for RCM ( Royal Canadian Mint) commemorative and collector coins. This was a good move. http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...FORUM_ID=144Because, over the past couple of years, the discussions became intolerable to participants and readers alike. Such strong animosity... vitriolic comments made by a few individuals that knew nothing nor cared about that segment in the first place. A sad situation. I hope the US side does not get to this point. Because after all, the passion to collect is strong within us all and there is no one group entitled more than another. There are interesting things to learn about NCLT, just like anything else in life. The quality of NCLT can be phenomenal and the designs inspiring. Healthy debates are to be had of course. As to the pertinence of the coins, quality and mintage are important factors but ultimately, let us revert to the free market to settle on the outcome, if purely based on profitability. But collecting isn't all about profit. As I have always said in the Canadian forum, NCLT collectors do not take anything away from non-NCLT collectors. We can co-exist and it's all good for our hobby.

I've been waiting for Krause to make a new catalog/book on NCLT's. I'm sure there are enough coins out there to fill it.
The US mint just doesn't grasp what collectors want. It's all about their profit

Hi jinx!
Of course it's all about (some) profit and there is nothing wrong with that. Is there? Otherwise we'll have to bail them out too!
It think the Mint MUST grasp what collectors want, or else they can't be profitable.

Agree on the too many choices comment. So many different things out there, many people probably stuck trying to figure out what to get,

---I think the weak US economy is the main (but not the only) reason for the drop in profits
---If you wants to raise the Mint's profits I suggest that you finally get rid of the One Dollar bank note and thus start a real effort to introduce the $1 coin into circulation. It would save money in the long run (haven't there been reports claiming it would go into the hundreds of millions) and make extra profits for the mint

Yes it would save money to trash the dollar bill and force the dollar coins. For starters they would be removing one item out of the Federal Reserves hands, and relying on our own government mint. That would be a good first step to getting rid of those evil crooks.

Quote: You can get a set of the proof presidents, but if you buy a proof set and a silver proof set to get the other coins you wind up with THREE sets of the proof presidents. I have sent more than one e-mail suggesting that if the mint offered a combination clad & silver proof set, I would buy it.

The problem is that if they took your suggestion they would simply ADD that set option and not remove any of the others.

I have no problem with that. Some people want silver, some want clad. I want both because I have holes for both. I do not like having the duplicates when buying both sets. I am currently buying just the full silver proof set, clad quarter set, and finding the last three clad coins at coin shows.

I think its due to economic conditions overall. When it comes to food and shelter versus a mint set , Food and shelter wins everytime. Lots of unemployed and out of work people in alot of areas .

The problem is a lot of collectors want to try and get one of everything the mint makes. he less affluent of these naturally can't get the gold and platinum coins, but they do try for the sets and the silver coins. They used to have a mint set and a proof set. Maybe a proof silver eagle and a commem dollar or two. Now they also have the silver proof set, the quarter set, the silver quarter set, the proof dollar set, maybe a special set with one of the commem dollars, then the roll set of cents, and five rolls sets of quarters, a roll set of halves, and six roll sets of dollars! Then add in the big price increases and a lot of them have said the heck with it. One other possibility is there were a lot more customers in 2009 because they wanted those cents. This year they didn't come back.

Quote: The problem is a lot of collectors want to try and get one of everything the mint makes. I have said it many times before... just because the mint sells it does not mean you have to buy it. People that complain that the mint is making too many products for this reason can easily choose to quit buying everything they make. I am not saying that these people are idiots. I am just as guilty by feeling that I need to fill every hole in my Dansco albums. I could have easily bought albums that omit the proofs (solving my previously stated proof set dilemma) and I am under no real obligation to put a coin in that 1922-D "Plain" hole!
