Yes, you can get silver coins from boxes of halves. I get two boxes a week from my local bank and I have found over 200 silver coins (mostly 40%) in about 5 months of searching. I have found 90% Kennedy's Franklins, Walkers, and even three Barbers!

As for returning the coins, find a local credit union with a coin counter. Get an account if you don't have one already. Just don't dump at TD. Their penny arcade only holds $100 worth of halves per bag, so you have to get an employee to help you dump - they get agitated too quickly.

What is your tolerance for not finding anything at all? If you are going to make this an every week thing, streaks like that will occur at some point. You will be seeing a lot of marked coins, and begin wondering if you are just looking at the same coins over and over.

Are you going to be looking for silver only, or are you trying to fill a book?

Yes I have a bank here that I deal with and they will allow me to order a box a week. You will find silver but dont get discouraged at first if you dont find any. It just may take a few boxes.

I started out with a few rolls a week, and now am at 4 boxes per week.

Some guys do 4 times that amount! I think I am at a comfortable level for me, especially when its dump time.

Good luck with the search; I hope it pans out better for you than the results I have been getting.

Well thank you and I am hoping to do well but I do not expect to find anything from the first box it probably will take time.

I've searched boxes for 3 years. Kept track of expenses. Cheaper for me to buy silver outright. Loose halves and rolls from the teller line is the way to go.

Maybe it is cheaper to go and buy silver. Also you would not have to worry about dumping a whole lot of coins all the time.

Can someone please explain this? I was thinking about starting to search halves in my area, but what "Expenses" are there? Are you talking gas, time, I know my bank charges 3% to run change through their machine, etc....

Also, it seems to me that if so many are searching these coins, $500 worth two or three times a week!, then how could there be any left to find?

Letting collectors sort through coins is an absolute money loser for banks. They take costly vault space, cost for Brinks shipping in both directions, sometimes require rewrapped, wear and tear on counters, and take employees away from what they're getting paid to do. If you find a bank where they do this with a smile, be sure you take them munchies for the break room now and then.

Oden-

People have been searching halves since the 70s. Pickings keep getting slimmer, but higher silver prices make some people feel it's worth it.

If you're making a special trip, figure 50ยข a mile out and back, the IRS does. The biggie: What's your time worth?

Some folks don't figure any of this as costs, chalking it up to their hobby. After all, it costs to drive to dinner or the movies, too.

I'm just pointing out that as a money-making proposition, it ain't gonna happen.
